Berberine: A nematocidal alkaloid from Argemone mexicana against Strongyloides venezuelensis
Experimental Parasitology, 2021Strongyloidiasis is a parasitosis that represents a public health problem, in tropical regions. The present study aimed to investigate the anthelmintic effects of several extracts of Argemone mexicana, as well as its main component berberine (Ber) against the third-stage larvae (L3) of Strongyloides venezuelensis in-vitro experiments.

Fungicidal and Herbicidal Activities of Berberine Related Alkaloids
Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 2000The 23 quaternary and tertiary protoberberines related to berberine were tested for in vitro and/or in vivo fungicidal and herbicidal activities. Among the compounds tested, there was some activity observed with some of only the protoberberinium salts, but not sufficiently strong or broad spectrum for agrochemical use. From the structure-activity point

Inhibitory Effects of Berberine-Type Alkaloids on Elastase
Planta Medica, 1993Berberine-type alkaloids and some structurally related alkaloids were tested for inhibitory activity on porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) and human sputum elastase (HSE). The chlorides of berberine, coptisine, and sanguinarine significantly inhibited the elastolytic activity of both the enzymes, but tetrahydroberberine had no effect on the activity. It

Anticonvulsant activity of berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid in mice
Epilepsy & Behavior, 2010Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid is reported to modulate several neurotransmitter systems like N-methyl-D-aspartate, nitric oxide and serotonin, which modulate convulsions. In addition, it is suggested that Berberis vulgaris may be useful in treatment of convulsion and epilepsy.

A review on analytical methods for natural berberine alkaloids
Journal of Separation Science, 2019AbstractBerberine alkaloids, a group of protoberberine alkaloids under the classification of isoquinoline alkaloids, include berberine, coptisine, palmatine, columbamine, dehydrocorydaline, jatrorrhizine, and epiberberine from natural sources. Studies have shown that berberine alkaloids have various pharmacological functions, such as antibacterial ...

Antinociceptive effect and identification of berberine alkaloid in Berberis ruscifolia extracts
Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2023Aerial parts (leaves and stems) of Berberis ruscifolia Lam. are a usual preparation as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antibacterial, and digestive in folk medicine. However, there were no previous studies of its chemical composition and biological activity related to analgesic effects. The evaluation of the anti-nociception of the ...

Berberine Alkaloids via 6,7-Dimethoxyisoquinoline-l-aldoxime
Nature, 1959FOR the past two years1, it has been clear that the development of a new and convenient method for the synthesis of the berberine alkaloids hinged on the preparation of 6,7-methylenedioxy (I)- and 6,7-dimethoxyisoquinoline aldehydes (II). The use of the first of these in the synthesis of tetrahydroberberine and related alkaloids has been reported2. The

Plant isoquinoline alkaloids: Advances in the chemistry and biology of berberine
European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2021Alkaloids are one of the most important classes of plant bioactives. Among these isoquinoline alkaloids possess varied structures and exhibit numerous biological activities. Basically these are biosynthetically produced via phenylpropanoid pathway. However, occasionally some mixed pathways may also occur to provide structural divergence.

Alkaloids as Aldose Reductase Inhibitors, with Special Reference to Berberine
The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2014Aldose reductase is the rate-limiting enzyme of the polyol pathway that leads to conversion of glucose to sorbitol. Its increased activity, which results in abnormal activation of the polyol pathway, is implicated in the development of long-term complications of diabetes mellitus. Different plant species and their active components have shown potent in
