Bioavailability of beta-carotene in humans

Normal healthy volunteers were studied after they ingested various beta-carotene doses. Daily administration of 15 or 45 mg beta-carotene resulted in significant increase in plasma beta-carotene levels. The extent of increase and the pattern of plasma beta-carotene levels showed substantial interindividual variation.

beta-Carotene has been reported to have an immunostimulatory effect. Recent studies suggest that beta-carotene supplementation can increase CD4 counts in HIV-infected patients. Our double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was designed to test the efficacy of beta-carotene in raising CD4 counts in HIV-infected patients.

Lack of genotoxicity with beta-carotene

A literature review was conducted on adverse effects of carotenoids on human and animal development. The data suggest that beta-carotene administration prevented genetic damage caused by mutagens both in bacterial and cell culture systems, and that large doses of pure beta-carotene do not cause embryotoxicity in rodents.

Serum beta-carotene before and after beta-carotene supplementation.

A two-month double-blind, placebo-controlled supplementation study of oral beta-carotene (20 mg daily) was conducted. Two hundred and twenty two 30-69 year old men were randomized into either a beta-carotene or placebo group, and serum samples were obtained at baseline, follow-up (2 months), and up to 12 weeks post-supplementation.
