Antibodies to beta(2)-glycoprotein I in ischemic stroke.
Cerebrovascular diseases (Basel, Switzerland), 2000Antibodies to beta(2)-glycoprotein (beta(2)-GPI) have been associated with recurrent thrombotic events in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The present study investigated the prevalence of antibodies to beta(2)-GPI in an unselected group of patients with ischemic stroke.

Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is accompanied by loss of phospholipid asymmetry, i.e., translocation of aminophospholipids such as phosphatidylserine to the outer leaflet of the plasma membranes, which results in recognition of these cells by macrophages.

Some researchers claim that lupus anticoagulant-positive plasma may cause a false-positive reaction in the test for activated protein C (APC) resistance, a hereditary thrombophilic state characterized by abnormal factor V, which frequently causes venous thrombosis.

beta 2 glycoprotein-I (beta 2GPI), a cofactor for antiphospholipid antibody (aPA) binding, binds to many anionic macromolecules including heparin. The nature of this interaction with heparin is not well understood and its effect on the purported biological functions of beta 2GPI is unknown.

[Anti-beta 2-glycoprotein I antibodies and systemic lupus erythematosus].
Medicina clinica, 2003We aimed to study the presence of anti-2-glycoprotein I antibodies (anti-2GPI) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) analyzing their relationship with anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL).63 patients with SLE and 54 healthy volunteers. Detection of anti-2GPI antibodies was performed by ELISA.25 (40%) patients with SLE and 1 (2%) control had ...
