beta-catenin functions in signal transduction in the Wnt signalling pathway, which has recently been implicated in hair follicle (HF) morphogenesis. beta-catenin gene mutations affecting exon 3 have been reported in a high percentage of human pilomatrixomas.

Wnt/beta-Catenin Signaling in Glioma
Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology, 2012Extensive data have shown that Wnt/beta-catenin signaling is associated with various disease pathologies, including an important role in tumorigenesis. Here, we review the regulation of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling in glioma, with particular focus on the expression signatures of the main components in Wnt/beta-catenin signaling, the role of key factors ...

p35/cdk5 binds and phosphorylates beta-catenin and regulates beta-catenin/presenilin-1 interaction
European Journal of Neuroscience, 2001The neuronal cyclin-dependent kinase p35/cdk5 comprises a catalytic subunit (cdk5) and an activator subunit (p35). To identify novel p35/cdk5 substrates, we utilized the yeast two-hybrid system to screen for human p35 binding partners. From one such screen, we identified beta-catenin as an interacting protein.

The Wnt/Wingless signaling transduction pathway plays an important role in both embryonic development and tumorigenesis. beta-Catenin, a key component of the Wnt signaling pathway, interacts with the TCF/LEF family of transcription factors and activates transcription of Wnt target genes.

HIF-2alpha enhances beta-catenin/TCF-driven transcription by interacting with beta-catenin.
Cancer research, 2011The tumor-promoting factors β-catenin and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) are often found to be coactivated in rapidly growing tumors. Recently, it was shown that HIF-1α negatively regulates Wnt/β-catenin signaling by sequestering β-catenin from β-catenin/T-cell factor (TCF).

Science's STKE : signal transduction knowledge environment, 2006
Wnts are secreted glycoproteins that act as ligands to stimulate receptor-mediated signal transduction pathways in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Activation of Wnt pathways can modulate cell proliferation, survival, cell behavior, and cell fate in both embryos and adults.

The APC gene is mutated in the majority of colorectal tumors. The product of this gene is a 300 kDa protein associated with beta-catenin and the human homolog of the Drosophila tumor suppressor DLG. The study of the function of APC provides important insights into the mechanisms of the development of colorectal tumor.

Beta-catenin undergoes both serine and tyrosine phosphorylation. Serine phosphorylation in the amino terminus targets beta-catenin for proteasome degradation, whereas tyrosine phosphorylation in the COOH terminus influences interaction with E-cadherin.
