Inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors by bicuculline
Neuropharmacology, 2001A study was made on the effects of bicuculline, the classical gamma-aminobutyric acid-A receptor antagonist, on heteromeric mouse muscle alphabetagammadelta, heteromeric neuronal rat alpha2beta4 and alpha4beta2 and homomeric human alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), expressed in Xenopus oocytes.

Bicuculline reversal of deprivation amblyopia in the cat
Nature, 1976CATS deprived of visual experience in one eye during a critical period of early life develop marked changes in the functional organisation of their visual system1–3. Useful vision seems to be lost in the deprived eye, and neurophysiological studies reveal a loss of binocular input to neurones in the visual cortex.

Amygdaloid kindling with bicuculline methiodide in rats
Experimental Neurology, 1988The effect of repeated intraamygdaloid injection of bicuculline methiodide (BM) was studied in rats. Chemitrodes for both microinjection and electrographic recording were implanted into the left basolateral amygdala. Two weeks after the surgery, a subconvulsive dose of BM (0.2 or 0.4 nmol) was administered through the chemitrodes every fourth day ...

Crystal and molecular structure of bicuculline
Journal of Crystal and Molecular Structure, 1973The crystal and molecular structure of the phthalide isoquinoline alkaloid bicuculline, C20H17NO6, has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space groupP212121 (No. 19) witha = 14·49,b = 10·90 andc = 10·43 A.

Antagonism between bicuculline and GABA in the cat brain
Brain Research, 1971Abstract (1) An investigation was made of the effects of bicuculline on the inhibition by amino acids of neurones in the lateral vestibular nucleus, the ventrobasal thalamus, and the cerebellar, hippocampal and cerebral cortices of cats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone sodium.

Bicuculline- and allylglycine-induced epilepsy in developing rats
Experimental Neurology, 1985The development of bicuculline- and allylglycine-induced epilepsy has been studied in developing rats (6 to 30 days old). The results showed that during the first period of life, in both experimental models, the behavioral modifications were atypical and poorly correlated to corresponding epileptic EEG changes.

Configuration and Conformation of Bicuculline, a GABA Antagonist
Nature New Biology, 1973THERE is growing evidence that γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory transmitter acting at various synapses of the mammalian central nervous system. Bicuculline, a potent convulsant, was discovered to be a specific antagonist of GABA by Curtis et al.1 and there have since been attempts, using molecular models2,3, to explain its mode of action in ...

Bicuculline-insensitive GABAB receptors
1984Subtypes of receptor recognition sites have been described for the majority of non-peptide neurotransmitters in the mammalian brain. Perhaps the only exception is the receptor for glycine, although strychnine-sensitive and insensitive sites have been suggested (Ryatl et al., 1972).
