Intestinal Farnesoid X Receptor Activation by Pharmacologic Inhibition of the Organic Solute Transporter α-β

open access: yesCellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2018
The organic solute transporter α-β (OSTα-OSTβ) mainly facilitates transport of bile acids across the basolateral membrane of ileal enterocytes. Therefore, inhibition of OSTα-OSTβ might have similar beneficial metabolic effects as intestine-specific ...

Does ursodeoxycholic acid change the proliferation of the colorectal mucosa? A randomized, placebo-controlled study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Background: In animal models ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) showed a chemoprotective effect against colon cancer. To explain this, a reduced proliferation of the colorectal mucosal proliferation was suggested.

Physiological characteristics of allo-cholic acid1

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2003
The physiological characterstics of allo-cholic acid (A91), a typically fetal bile acid that reappears during liver regeneration and carcinogenesis were investigated.

Mechanism of Hydrophobic Bile Acid-Induced Hepatocyte Injury and Drug Discovery

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2020
Cholestatic liver disease is caused by the obstruction of bile synthesis, transport, and excretion in or outside the liver by a variety of reasons.

Bile Acid Uptake Transporters as Targets for Therapy [PDF]

open access: yesDigestive Diseases, 2017
Background: Bile acids are potent signaling molecules that regulate glucose, lipid and energy homeostasis predominantly via the bile acid receptors farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5).

A frequent variant in the human bile salt export pump gene ABCB11 is associated with hepatitis C virus infection, but not liver stiffness in a German population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: The human ATP-binding cassette, subfamily B, member 11 (ABCB11) gene encodes the bile salt export pump, which is exclusively expressed at the canalicular membrane of hepatocytes.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Intestinal Absorption of Bile Salts

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1990
Bile acids are secreted from the liver into the duodenum where they aid in the digestion and absorption of dietary lipids. Absorption of bile acids occurs through both ionic and nonionic diffusion in the jejunum and colon and through an active sodium ion-

Metabolic effects of intestinal absorption and enterohepatic cycling of bile acids

open access: yesActa Pharmaceutica Sinica B, 2015
The classical functions of bile acids include acting as detergents to facilitate the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the gut. In addition, bile acids also act as signaling molecules to regulate glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism and energy ...
