Monitoring Atypical Metabolite Biomarkers in Patients with Bile Acid Synthesis Disorders by a Novel Targeted Tandem Mass Spectrometry Assay [PDF]
Background/Objectives: Bile acid synthesis disorders (BASDs) represent a distinct category of progressive familiar cholestatic liver disease. A novel targeted mass spectrometry assay was developed for the accurate measurement of the major urinary ...

Identification of bile alcohols in rat bile.
Bile alcohols in rat bile were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Six bile alcohols were newly identified as minor constituents in addition to 5 beta-cholestane-3 alpha,7 alpha,12 alpha,26-tetrol, major bile alcohol of rat bile. The

Evolution of substrate specificity for the bile salt transporter ASBT (SLC10A2)[S]
The apical Na+-dependent bile salt transporter (ASBT/SLC10A2) is essential for maintaining the enterohepatic circulation of bile salts. It is not known when Slc10a2 evolved as a bile salt transporter or how it adapted to substantial changes in bile salt ...

Bile salts of vertebrates: structural variation and possible evolutionary significance[S]
Biliary bile salt composition of 677 vertebrate species (103 fish, 130 reptiles, 271 birds, 173 mammals) was determined. Bile salts were of three types: C27 bile alcohols, C27 bile acids, or C24 bile acids, with default hydroxylation at C-3 and C-7.

Capillary gas-liquid chromatographic separation of bile alcohols.
Gas-liquid chromatographic separation of C23, C24, C25, C26, and C27 bile alcohols with either 3 alpha, 7 alpha-dihydroxylated or 3 alpha, 7 alpha, 12 alpha-trihydroxylated ring system on two capillary columns, CP-Sil-19 CB and CP-Sil-5 CB, is described.

Identification of 5 beta-cholestane-3 alpha,7 alpha,12 alpha,24,25,26-hexol in human urine
A new bile alcohol, 5 beta-cholestanehexol, was identified in the urine of healthy humans as the glucuronide. The bile alcohol glucuronide fraction was isolated by an ion exchange chromatography on piperidinohydroxypropyl Sephadex LH-20.
