Significant forces between dielectric objects can be induced by intense optical fields. We discuss the origin of these forces which are very long range and oscillate in sign at the optical wavelength. A consequence is that light waves can serve to bind matter in new organized forms.

Do we feel bound by our own misrepresentations? Does one act of cheating compel the cheater to make subsequent choices that maintain the false image even at a cost? To answer these questions we employed a two-task paradigm such that in the first task the participants could benefit from false reporting of private observations whereas in the second they ...

Molecular binding is an interaction between molecules that results in a stable association between those molecules. Cooperative binding occurs if the number of binding sites of a macromolecule that are occupied by a specific type of ligand is a nonlinear function of this ligand's concentration.

Ion‐Pair Binding: Is Binding Both Binding Better?
AbstractIt is often tempting to explain chemical phenomena on the basis of intuitive principles, but this practice can frequently lead to biased analysis of data and incorrect conclusions. One such intuitive principle is brought into play in the binding of salts by synthetic receptors.

Pneumococcal vaccination responses in adults with subnormal IgG subclass concentrations
Background We sought to compare Pneumovax®23 responses in adults with subnormal IgG subclass concentrations. We studied adults with normal total IgG, frequent/severe respiratory infection, and subnormal IgG1, IgG3, or IgG1 + IgG3 before and after ...

On a necessary aspect for the Riesz basis property for indefinite Sturm-Liouville problems [PDF]
In 1996, H. Volkmer observed that the inequality \[(\int_{-1}^1\frac{1}{|r|}|f'|dx)^2 \le K^2 \int_{-1}^1|f|^2dx\int_{-1}^1\Big|\Big(\frac{1}{r}f'\Big)'\Big|^2dx \] is satisfied with some positive constant $K>0$ for a certain class of functions $f$ on $[-

Extensive ambient extraction of several metals from human hair compromises some assumptions concerning the binding of metals to hair and the biochemical process of metal incorporation into hair. Hair metal concentrations can reveal metal intoxications and metal deficiencies. The scalp hair selected for investigation included specimens of different ...

Influence of composite fibers on the properties of heavy concrete
The article presents the results of research an effect of glass-plastic fiber on the properties of heavy concrete. It determined that adding glass-plastic fibers in heavy concrete compositions in an amount of 0.5 to 2.5 % by volume leads to decreasing of
