Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.

Preexisting Comorbidities Predicting COVID-19 and Mortality in the UK Biobank Community Cohort

open access: yesThe journals of gerontology. Series A, Biological sciences and medical sciences, 2020
Background Hospitalized COVID-19 patients tend to be older and frequently have hypertension, diabetes, or coronary heart disease, but whether these comorbidities are true risk factors (ie, more common than in the general older population) is unclear.

Menopause and risk of hip fracture in middle-aged Chinese women a 10-year follow-up of China Kadoorie Biobank

open access: yes, 2019
Objective: Bone loss is accelerated after menopause in women, as is the risk of hip fracture, but little is known about the importance of age at menopause, time since menopause, and total reproductive years for risk of hip fracture.

Establishment of a humanized patient‐derived xenograft mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer for preclinical evaluation of combination immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We have established a humanized orthotopic patient‐derived xenograft (Hu‐oPDX) mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) that recapitulates human tumor–immune interactions. Using combined anti‐PD‐L1/anti‐CD73 immunotherapy, we demonstrate the model's improved biological relevance and enhanced translational value for preclinical ...

Identifying proteomic risk factors for cancer using prospective and exome analyses of 1463 circulating proteins and risk of 19 cancers in the UK Biobank

open access: yesNature Communications
The availability of protein measurements and whole exome sequence data in the UK Biobank enables investigation of potential observational and genetic protein-cancer risk associations. We investigated associations of 1463 plasma proteins with incidence of

Vitamin D concentrations and COVID-19 infection in UK Biobank

open access: yesDiabetes & metabolic syndrome, 2020
Background and aims COVID-19 and low levels of vitamin D appear to disproportionately affect black and minority ethnic individuals. We aimed to establish whether blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration was associated with COVID-19 risk, and ...

KDM7A and KDM1A inhibition suppresses tumour promoting pathways in prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Treatment resistance is a major challenge for patients with advanced prostate cancer. This study examined an alternative approach to target the major prostate cancer‐promoting pathway by targeting epigenetic factors, whose levels are higher in tumours.

The Bio-Objectification of Umbilical Cord Blood: Socio-Economic and Epistemic Implications of Biobanking

open access: yesTecnoscienza, 2014
In the current biomedical literature Umbilical Cord Blood (UCB) is considered a valid source of hematopoietic stem cells for hemopoiesis reconstitution. The acknowledgment of the potential of UCB for transplants prompted the transformation of this human ...

Disease prediction with multi-omics and biomarkers empowers case–control genetic discoveries in the UK Biobank

open access: yesNature Genetics
The emergence of biobank-level datasets offers new opportunities to discover novel biomarkers and develop predictive algorithms for human disease. Here, we present an ensemble machine-learning framework (machine learning with phenotype associations ...
