Mechanics of Ageing—From Building to Biological Materials

open access: yes, 2017
In this work, we present a general model for the analysis of concrete and biological tissues as multiphase porous materials, with particular regard to their ageing.

Adverse events in both childhood and adulthood are associated with molecular, clinical and functional markers of ageing

open access: yesBMC Medicine
Background Adverse events across the lifespan have been linked to poorer health outcomes, but the biological mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to quantify the independent and joint associations of adversity experienced in childhood and/

Biological ageing and frailty markers in breast cancer patients

open access: yesAging, 2015
Older cancer patients are a highly heterogeneous population in terms of global health and physiological reserves, and it is often difficult to determine the best treatment. Moreover, clinical tools currently used to assess global health require dedicated

Interrogating the immune landscape of microsatellite stable RAS‐mutated colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
COLOSSUS project RAS‐mutated MSS colon cancer study explored transcriptomics and immune cell density by immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunoscore (IS), ISIC/TuLIS scores, mutation counts, and detected different prevalences but similar microenvironment composition across immune markers with clinical relevance for future immunotherapy combination ...

Local and global patterns support medical imaging as a biomarker of ageing

open access: yesCommunications Medicine
Background Understanding human ageing across multiple organs is essential for characterising individual health trajectories and identifying abnormal ageing processes.

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Slowed Gompertzian ageing in long-lived C. elegans results from expansion of decrepitude, not decelerated ageing

open access: yesNature Communications
In populations of many animal species, including humans, mortality rates increase exponentially with advancing age. The scale and rate of increase can be set by two parameters, α and β, respectively, of the Gompertz equation.

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.

New insights into healthy ageing, inflammageing and frailty using metabolomics

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging
Human ageing is a normal process and does not necessarily result in the development of frailty. A mix of genetic, environmental, dietary, and lifestyle factors can have an impact on ageing, and whether an individual develops frailty.
