Surface modification of biomaterials : methods, analysis and applications /

open access: yes, 2011
The surface modification of biomaterials plays a significant role in determining the outcome of biological-material interactions. With the appropriate modification a material's surface can be tailored to improve biocompatibility, adhesion and cell ...

A role for SUMO modification in transcriptional repression and activation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Since the discovery of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-related modifier) family of proteins just over a decade ago, a plethora of substrates have been uncovered including many regulators of transcription.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Biologically Modified Polyether Ether Ketone as Dental Implant Material

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2020
Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a non-toxic polymer with elastic modulus close to human bone. Compared with metal implants, PEEK has advantages such as evasion of stress shielding effect, easy processing, and similar color as teeth, among others ...

Role of SUMO-1 modification in transcriptional activation

open access: yes, 2012
In unstimulated cells, the transcription factor NF-κB is held in the cytoplasm in an inactive state by IκB inhibitor proteins. Activation of NF--KB is mediated by signal induced degradation of IκBα via the ubiquitin proteasome-dependent pathway ...

Functional Polymers by Post-Polymerization Modification: Concepts, Guidelines, and Applications

open access: yes
In modern polymer science a variety of polymerization methods for the direct synthesis of polymers bearing functional groups are known. However, there is still a large number of functional groups that may either completely prevent polymerization or lead ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Recurrent modification of floral morphology in heterantherous Solanum reveals a parallel shift in reproductive strategy

open access: yes, 2014
Floral morphology determines the pattern of pollen transfer within and between individuals. In hermaphroditic species, the spatial arrangement of sexual organs influences the rate of self-pollination as well as the placement of pollen in different areas ...
