Mechanistic basis for inhibition of the extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase GES‐1 by enmetazobactam and tazobactam

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of huge importance, resulting in over 1 million deaths each year. Here, we describe how a new drug, enmetazobactam, designed to help fight resistant bacterial diseases, inhibits a key enzyme (GES‐1) responsible for AMR. Our data show it is a more potent inhibitor than the related tazobactam, with high‐level computation

Saliva proteomics updates in biomedicine

open access: yesJournal of Biological Research - Thessaloniki, 2019
In the years of personalized (or precision) medicine the ‘omics’ methodologies in biomedical sciences—genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics—are helping researchers to detect quantifiable biological characteristics, or biomarkers, that ...

Du déterminisme biologique au déterminisme social

open access: yesSocio, 2016
Historical semantics, while being opposed to the idea of linear progress, does enable us to show that notions of biological determinism and social determinism were broadly conceived as being complementary.

C9orf72 ALS‐causing mutations lead to mislocalization and aggregation of nucleoporin Nup107 into stress granules

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in the C9orf72 gene represent the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Using patient‐derived neurons and C. elegans models, we find that the nucleoporin Nup107 is dysregulated in C9orf72‐associated ALS. Conversely, reducing Nup107 levels mitigates disease‐related changes.

Focused Ion Beam in the Study of Biomaterials and Biological Matter

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2012
The application of focused ion beam (FIB) techniques in the life sciences has progressed by leaps and bounds over the past decade. A once dedicated ion beam instrument, the focused ion beam today is generally coupled with a plethora of complementary ...

Visualizing genome and systems biology: technologies, tools, implementation techniques and trends, past, present and future

open access: yesGigaScience, 2015
“Α picture is worth a thousand words.” This widely used adage sums up in a few words the notion that a successful visual representation of a concept should enable easy and rapid absorption of large amounts of information. Although, in general, the notion

Novel and unscrutinized immune entities of the zebrafish gut

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Understudied cells of the zebrafish immune system include bona fide immune cells and epithelial (‐derived) cells with immune functions. Research focusing on zebrafish cells which demonstrate similarities to mammalian immune cell counterparts may help us understand the pathologies in which they are implicated. Currently available and advanced tools make

From lactation to malignancy: A comparison between healthy and cancerous breast gland at single‐cell resolution reveals new issues for tumorigenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing reveals an opposite role of SLPI in basal tumors based on metastatic spread, along with shared activation of specific regulons in cancer cells and mature luminal lactocytes, as well as downregulation of MALAT1 and NEAT1 in the latter.

Accurate and Efficient Mapping of the Cross-Linked microRNA-mRNA Duplex Reads

open access: yesiScience, 2019
Summary: MicroRNA (miRNA) trans-regulates the stability of many mRNAs and controls their expression levels. Reconstruction of the miRNA-mRNA interactome is key to the understanding of the miRNA regulatory network and related biological processes. However,
