Generic principles of active transport

open access: yes, 2006
Nonequilibrium collective motion is ubiquitous in nature and often results in a rich collection of intringuing phenomena, such as the formation of shocks or patterns, subdiffusive kinetics, traffic jams, and nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Dihydromotuporamine Derivatives in Cells Containing Active Polyamine Transporters [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2005
Dihydromotuporamine C (4) and its 4,4-triamine analogue (5) were synthesized in good yield using ring-closing metathesis (RCM) methods. Comparison of their biological activities (Ki determinations in L1210 cells and IC50 determinations in L1210, CHO, and CHO-MG cells) revealed that the motuporamine derivatives do not use the polyamine transporter (PAT)

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Tissue specific analysis reveals a differential organization and regulation of both ethylene biosynthesis and E8 during climacteric ripening of tomato [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Solanum lycopersicum or tomato is extensively studied with respect to the ethylene metabolism during climacteric ripening, focusing almost exclusively on fruit pericarp. In this work the ethylene biosynthesis pathway was examined in all major

Biological and Medical Aspects of Active Heal Transport of Bile Acids

open access: yesAnnals of Medicine, 1991
The active transport of conjugated bile acids by the ileum is responsible for the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, a physiological process that ensures an ample supply to the intestine of these key biological surfactants, irrespective of the rate of their biosynthesis from cholesterol.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Two-Species Active Transport along Cylindrical Biofilaments is Limited by Emergent Topological Hindrance

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2018
Active motion of molecules along filamentous structures is a crucial feature of cell biology and is often modeled with the paradigmatic asymmetric simple exclusion process.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Hydrodynamics of a Granular Gas in a Heterogeneous Environment

open access: yesEntropy, 2017
We analyze the transport properties of a low density ensemble of identical macroscopic particles immersed in an active fluid. The particles are modeled as inelastic hard spheres (granular gas).
