Macro-scale Topology Optimization for Controlling Internal Shear Stress in a Porous Scaffold Bioreactor [PDF]

open access: yesBiotechnology & Bioengineering, 109(7):1844-1854 (2012), 2011
Shear stress is an important physical factor that regulates proliferation, migration and morphogenesis. In particular, the homeostasis of blood vessels is dependent on shear stress. To mimic this process ex vivo, efforts have been made to seed scaffolds with vascular and other cell types in the presence of growth factors and under pulsatile flow ...

Computational fluid dynamics simulation improves the design and characterization of a plug‐flow‐type scale‐down reactor for microbial cultivation processes

open access: yesBiotechnology Journal, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Graphical Abstract and Lay Summary The heterogenous production conditions in large‐scale bioreactors cause scale‐up problems, such as reduced biomass or product yield, to occur during bioprocesses. In this study, we designed a two‐compartment scale‐down reactor and used it to simulate large‐scale heterogenous production conditions, allowing us to ...

Scalable Manufacturing of Radiation‐Tolerant Potentiometric Electrodes: A Systematic Transition from Laboratory to Semiautomated Fabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laboratory protocols for producing thin‐film pH electrodes for sterilized single‐use technologies have been successfully developed into a semiautomated workflow, with higher throughput and precision of membrane thickness. Accuracies are within 0.05 pH units versus ground truth, and uncertainty analysis reveals the largest sources of error to be derived

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

Dynamics and Control of Oscillatory Bioreactors [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Bioreactors are widely used in many industries to generate a range of products using various host cells e.g., yeast, insect, and mammalian cells. Depending on the process, product, and host cell, some bioreactors exhibit sustained periodic behavior in key process variables such as metabolite concentrations, biomass, and product titer.
