On Bitter's Patterns [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review, 1935
F. Bitter,(1) by the sedimentation method, has obtained regular striations on ferromagnetic single crystals. His results suggest that the line-up of the magnetic moments in these crystals is not homogeneous. There is hardly any doubt that Bitter's patterns are characteristic for the thermodynamically stable state of solid iron, nickel, etc.

The neuronal and molecular basis of quinine-dependent bitter taste signaling in Drosophila larvae

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2014
Bitter sensing can alert an animal that a specific type of food is potentially harmful for the organism and should not be consumed. However, not all bitter compounds are equally toxic and some bitter tastants may even have a positive valence in certain ...

Tailoring topological altermagnetic spin texture via interfacial exchange coupling in quasi-2D CrSb/(Bi, Sb)2Te3 thin film

open access: yesNature Communications
Altermagnets featuring collinear magnetic order and momentum-space spin splitting are a newly identified class of magnetically ordered materials. Most studies so far on altermagnetism focus on quasi-3D (e.g., > 10 nm) systems with bulk symmetry-dominance,

Culinary Chemistry as a Platform for Interfacial Materials Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Culinary processes control interfaces through heating, shear, gelation, and molecular transport. This Review connects selected gastronomic examples with food‐derived nanomaterials, plasmonic sensing, anthocyanin photovoltaics, and intelligent packaging. Original agar‐based plasmonic films illustrate the proposed translation.

Bitter and twisted [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2000
‘Bitter-and-twisted’ individuals are found in all academic institutions. The people most susceptible to this syndrome are those with high intelligence and deep personal aspirations to accomplish something important. The age of onset is quite variable; serious cases may first appear during graduate school, only to worsen over time.
