Carotenoid Derivates in Achiote (Bixa orellana) Seeds: Synthesis and Health Promoting Properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Bixa orellana (family Bixaceae) is a neotropical fast growing perennial tree of great agro-industrial value because its seeds have a high carotenoid content, mainly bixin.

Selective inhibition of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases : phenotypic effects on shoot branching [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Members of the carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase family catalyse the oxidative cleavage of carotenoids at various chain positions, leading to the formation of a wide range of apocarotenoid signalling molecules.

Bioconversion of carotenoids into high‐value crocins using a marine sponge carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 5, Page 3230-3246, June 2026.
Summary Carotenoids and apocarotenoids are widespread specialized metabolites, yet animals, including sponges, lack the ability to synthesize carotenoids de novo and must obtain them from dietary or microbial sources. The roles of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) in marine animals remain largely unexplored. A CCD from the marine sponge Suberites

Activation of NRF2 by topical apocarotenoid treatment mitigates radiation-induced dermatitis

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2020
Radiation therapy is a frontline treatment option for cancer patients; however, the effects of radiotherapy on non-tumor tissue (e.g. radiation-induced dermatitis) often worsen patient quality of life.

Caracterización química y cuantificación del rendimiento de extracción de pigmento en siete accesiones mexicanas de Bixa orellana [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Achiote (Bixa orellana) is a plant used for obtaining a natural dye rich on carotenoids (mainly bixin and norbixin); it is also the plant species with the highest content of tocotrienols in nature.

Optical Manipulation of Multiferroic Phases in BiFeO3 Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 7, 7 April 2026.
At the strain‐driven morphotropic phase boundary, optical control over the multiferroic rhombohedral and tetragonal phase mixture is demonstrated using above‐bandgap light illumination. The photoinduced charge carriers modify the electrostatic environment and induce the conversion into a single tetragonal phase.

Modifications of Prenyl Side Chains in Natural Product Biosynthesis

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 136, Issue 52, December 20, 2024.
This review summarizes the unique modifications of prenyl side chains involved in natural product biosynthesis, including epoxidation, dehydrogenation, oxidation of methyl groups to carboxyl groups, C−C bond cleavage and oxidative cyclization. Abstract In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the enzymatic machinery ...

Characterization of Bixin by UV-Visible Spectroscopy and HPLC, and Its Application as Latent Fingermark Developer

open access: yesAnalytica
Fingerprints are essential for human identification and are valuable tools in criminal investigations. The pursuit of new materials for digital printing is expanding, with increasing interest in natural compounds such as bixin, sourced from annatto seeds.

Plasma fatty acid profile in dairy cows associated with the inclusion of annatto in their diet

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Animal Sciences, 2020
The objective of this study was to evaluate the plasma lipid profile and plasma fatty acids of dairy cows receiving diets supplemented with annatto. A total of 32 Holstein cows (550 kg), distributed in a completely randomized design, were allocated to ...

Manipulating Ferroelectricity Without Electrical Bias: A Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research, Volume 5, Issue 4, April 2026.
Alternatives to electrical bias to control ferroelectric polarization are highly desired for the development of ferroelectric‐based applications. The polarizing role of chemically engineered surfaces, the impact of chemical substitution and mechanical pressure, and light‐induced effects on the final polarization state are highlighted in this short ...
