Antioxidants from Annatto Seeds as Possible Inhibitory Agents of the Hepatotoxicity Induced by the Antitumor Agent Cisplatin

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2016
The effects of annatto seeds and of bixin on the oxidative damage induced by cisplatin in male Wistar rats was evaluated in the present study by way of lipid peroxidation, weight gain, the food efficiency coefficient, fat deposits in the hepatocytes and ...

Data_Sheet_11_Identifying Bixa orellana L. New Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenases 1 and 4 Potentially Involved in Bixin Biosynthesis.PDF

open access: yes, 2022
Carotene cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) are a large family of Fe2+ dependent enzymes responsible for the production of a wide variety of apocarotenoids, such as bixin. Among the natural apocarotenoids, bixin is second in economic importance.

From Extraction to Stabilization: Employing a 22 Experimental Design in Developing Nutraceutical-Grade Bixin from Bixa orellana L.

open access: yesFoods
Bixin is the main carotenoid found in the outer portion of the seeds of Bixa orellana L., commercially known as annatto. This compound is industrially employed in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food formulations as a natural dye to replace chemical ...

From plant to fabric: Environmental opportunities associated with annatto dye for sustainable development in the textile industry

open access: yesColoration Technology, Volume 142, Issue 3, Page 333-353, June 2026.
Abstract Natural dyes are compounds that occur naturally in several organisms and are classified based on chemical structure and application method. The literature cites several natural dyes used in industrial transformation processes. Annatto dye is used in the food industry, and its biological pigment is extracted from the annatto seed. However, this

Bioconversion of carotenoids into high‐value crocins using a marine sponge carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 5, Page 3230-3246, June 2026.
Summary Carotenoids and apocarotenoids are widespread specialized metabolites, yet animals, including sponges, lack the ability to synthesize carotenoids de novo and must obtain them from dietary or microbial sources. The roles of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) in marine animals remain largely unexplored. A CCD from the marine sponge Suberites

Activation of NRF2 by topical apocarotenoid treatment mitigates radiation-induced dermatitis

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2020
Radiation therapy is a frontline treatment option for cancer patients; however, the effects of radiotherapy on non-tumor tissue (e.g. radiation-induced dermatitis) often worsen patient quality of life.

Optical Manipulation of Multiferroic Phases in BiFeO3 Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 7, 7 April 2026.
At the strain‐driven morphotropic phase boundary, optical control over the multiferroic rhombohedral and tetragonal phase mixture is demonstrated using above‐bandgap light illumination. The photoinduced charge carriers modify the electrostatic environment and induce the conversion into a single tetragonal phase.
