Multilayer Bixin Microcapsules: The Impact of Native Carbohydrates on the Microencapsulation Efficiency and Dispersion Stability

open access: yesFoods, 2019
Bixin is a hydrophobic carotenoid present in the integument of the seeds of Bixa orellana. Microencapsulation was applied to obtain water dispersible formulations and protect the colorant against degradation.

Use of Plant Proteins as Microencapsulating Agents of Bioactive Compounds Extracted from Annatto Seeds (Bixa orellana L.)

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2020
This study aimed to assess the thermal stability of the bioactive compounds from annatto seed extract, encapsulated by ionic gelation using quinoa proteins, lentil proteins, soy proteins, and sodium caseinate as carrying materials.

A Fully Edible Transistor Based on a Toothpaste Pigment

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 41, November 6, 2024.
Edible electronics lacks reliable edible semiconductors, needed to enable active electronics components 100% safe for ingestion. Here, this study exploits Copper(II) Phthalocyanine, a pigment commonly found in toothpaste and consumed daily without adverse effects, and also recognized as a well‐established organic semiconductor, for the first ...

Bixin uptake by blood lipoproteins and leukocytes in dogs

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2007
Bixin may possess anti‐inflammatory action. We studied bixin uptake in dogs given a single dose or repeated doses. In Exp. 1, Beagle dogs (2 yr old; n = 6/dose) were dosed with 0, 5, 10, 20 or 40 mg bixin. Blood was taken at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 h post‐administration. Because norbixin uptake was low, only data on bixin are reported.

Combined Electrostatic and Strain Engineering of BiFeO3 Thin Films at the Morphotropic Phase Boundary

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 10, Issue 11, November 2024.
The emergence of ferroelectricity near the morphotropic phase boundary in BiFeO3 directly during thin‐film growth is explored. The films form purely in the tetragonal phase with zero critical thickness. Signatures of monoclinic phase coexistence only appear upon cooling.
