Concurrency control using locking with deferred blocking

[1990] Proceedings. Sixth International Conference on Data Engineering, 2002
The concurrency control method employed can be critical to the performance of transaction processing systems. The conventional locking scheme tends to suffer from the blocking phenomenon. The proposed scheme reduces the blocking probability by deferring the blocking behavior of transactions to the later stages of their execution.

'Lime', 'Open Lock', and 'Blocked'

Proceedings of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2020
Cybersecurity warnings are frequently ignored or misinterpreted by even experienced adults. While studies have been conducted to examine warning design for adults, there is little data to establish recommendations for children. We conducted user studies with 22 children (ages 10-12) and with 22 adults. We compare their risk perception of warning design

A Blocking Bound for Nested FIFO Spin Locks

2016 IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS), 2016
Bounding worst-case blocking delays due to lock contention is a fundamental problem in the analysis of multiprocessor real-time systems. However, virtually all fine-grained (i.e., non-asymptotic) analyses published to date make a simplifying (but impractical) assumption: critical sections must not be nested.

Transactions, Locking, Blocking, and Deadlocking

2012
In this chapter, I’ll review recipes for handling transactions, lock monitoring, blocking, and deadlocking. I’ll review the SQL Server table option that allows you to disable lock escalation or enable it for a partitioned table. I’ll demonstrate the snapshot isolation level, as well as Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) that are used to monitor and ...

Reversible Morphology Locking via Metal Infiltration in a Block Copolymer

ACS Nano, 2023
Metal infiltration from an acid solution of a metal precursor into the poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) microdomains of a polystyrene-b-P2VP block copolymer is shown to reduce the uptake of solvent vapor during a subsequent solvent annealing process, locking the morphology of the self-assembled microdomains.

Locking and Blocking

2015
Locking is an essential aspect of any RDBMS, because it allows concurrent users to access the same data, without the risk of their updates conflicting and causing data integrity issues. This chapter discusses how locking, deadlocks, and transactions work in SQL Server; it then moves on to discuss how transactions impact SQL Server 2014’s new In-Memory ...

Implementation of scalable blocking locks using an adaptive thread scheduler

Proceedings of International Conference on Parallel Processing, 2002
Blocking locks are commonly used in parallel programs to improve application performance and system throughput. However, most implementations of such locks suffer from two major problems-latency and scalability. We propose an implementation of blocking locks using scheduler adaptation which exploits the interaction between thread schedulers and locks ...

Lock and Train Exofinger: Wearable finger blocking exoskeleton device

2017 IEEE 14th International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control (ICNSC), 2017
This paper briefly present a new device concept, namely Exofinger, for patients recovering from finger tendon injuries. The goal of this device is to perform repetitive motions of flexing and extending the injured fingers for the patient with ease. Although the current device is still in prototype phase and lack human trials, it is able to perform well
