Transcranial focused ultrasound-induced blood‒brain barrier opening in mice without shaving hairs

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
AbstractAcoustic coupling through hairs remains a challenge to performing transcranial-focused ultrasound procedures. Here, we demonstrated that this challenge could be addressed by using oil as the coupling medium, leveraging oil's high affinity to hairs due to their inherent hydrophobicity.

LC–MS/MS-based in vitro and in vivo investigation of blood–brain barrier integrity by simultaneous quantitation of mannitol and sucrose [PDF]

open access: yesFluids and Barriers of the CNS, 2020
AbstractBackgroundUnderstanding the pathophysiology of the blood brain–barrier (BBB) plays a critical role in diagnosis and treatment of disease conditions. Applying a sensitive and specific LC–MS/MS technique for the measurement of BBB integrity with high precision, we have recently introduced non-radioactive [13C12]sucrose as a superior marker ...

Cdc42-Dependent Transfer of mir301 from Breast Cancer-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Regulates the Matrix Modulating Ability of Astrocytes at the Blood–Brain Barrier [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2020
Breast cancer brain metastasis is a major clinical challenge and is associated with a dismal prognosis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the early stages of brain metastasis can provide opportunities to develop efficient diagnostics and therapeutics for this significant clinical challenge.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri normalizes blood–brain barrier dysfunction and neurodevelopment deficits associated with prenatal exposure to lipopolysaccharide

open access: yesGut Microbes, 2023
Maternal immune activation (MIA) derived from late gestational infection such as seen in chorioamnionitis poses a significantly increased risk for neurodevelopmental deficits in the offspring. Manipulating early microbiota through maternal probiotic supplementation has been shown to be an effective means to improve outcomes; however, the mechanisms ...

Intracranial glioma xenograft model rapidly reestablishes blood–brain barrier integrity for longitudinal imaging of tumor progression using fluorescence molecular tomography and contrast agents [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Optics, 2020
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a major obstacle to detecting and treating brain tumors. Overcoming this challenge will facilitate the early and accurate detection of brain lesions and guide surgical resection of tumors. We generated an orthotopic brain tumor model that simulates the pathophysiology of gliomas at early stages; determine the BBB ...

Compromised blood–brain barrier competence in remote brain areas in ischemic stroke rats at the chronic stage [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, 2014
ABSTRACTStroke is a life‐threatening disease leading to long‐term disability in stroke survivors. Cerebral functional insufficiency in chronic stroke might be due to pathological changes in brain areas remote from the initial ischemic lesion, i.e., diaschisis.

Blood–Brain Barrier Breakdown and Astrocyte Reactivity Evident in the Absence of Behavioral Changes after Repeated Traumatic Brain Injury

open access: yesNeurotrauma Reports, 2021
Repeated traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) cause debilitating effects. Without understanding the acute effects of repeated TBIs, treatment options to halt further degeneration and damage cannot be developed. This study sought to examine the acute effects of blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, edema, inflammation and behavioral changes after either a ...

High levels of endothelial ICAM-1 prohibit natalizumab mediated abrogation of CD4+ T cell arrest on the inflamed BBB under flow in vitro

open access: yesJournal of Neuroinflammation, 2023
Introduction The humanized anti-α4 integrin blocking antibody natalizumab (NTZ) is an effective treatment for relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) that is associated with the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).

Establishment of a Human iPSC- and Nanofiber-Based Microphysiological Blood–Brain Barrier System

open access: yesACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2018
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an active and complex diffusion barrier that separates the circulating blood from the brain and extracellular fluid, regulates nutrient transportation, and provides protection against various toxic compounds and pathogens.

Harmful Effects of Smoking Cannabis: A Cerebrovascular and Neurological Perspective

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2019
Apart from being used as a medicine, cannabis or marijuana is the most widely abused recreational drug all over the world. The legalization and decriminalization of cannabis in Canada and various states of USA may be the underlying reason of the ...
