Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

The blood clam culture [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
The Blood clam Anadara granosa (Linnaeus) is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific. Besides being an important resource for the capture fishery in several countries, it is extensively cultivated in Japan, Malaysia, Republic of China, Thailand and ...

Activation of human NK cells by Plasmodium-infected red blood cells.

open access: yes, 2012
This chapter describes a protocol to assess activation of human NK cells following in vitro stimulation with malaria-infected red blood cells. Activation is assessed by flow cytometry, staining for cell surface expression of CD69 and accumulation of ...

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

LINC01116, a hypoxia‐lncRNA marker of pathological lymphangiogenesis and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The LINC01116 long noncoding RNA is induced by hypoxia and associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates in two cohorts of lung adenocarcinoma patients. Here, we demonstrate that besides its expression in cancer cells, LINC01116 is markedly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells of the tumor stroma in which it participates in hypoxia ...

Mortality in intensive care: The impact of bacteremia and the utility of systemic inflammatory response syndrome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of bacteremia on intensive care unit (ICU) mortality and to develop a bacteremia prediction tool using systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria. Methods: Patients

Therapeutic strategies for MMAE‐resistant bladder cancer through DPP4 inhibition

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We established monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE)‐resistant bladder cancer (BC) cell lines by exposure to progressively increasing concentrations of MMAE in vitro. RNA sequencing showed DPP4 expression was increased in MMAE‐resistant BC cells. Both si‐DPP4 and the DPP4 inhibitor sitagliptin suppressed the viability of MMAE‐resistant BC cells.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Spectrum of Isolates and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern from Blood Cultures in Tertiary Care Hospital, Riyadh

open access: yesJournal of Pure and Applied Microbiology
Clinical presentation of bloodstream infection ranges from transitory bacteremia to fulminant septic shock with substantial mortality. Regular monitoring of bacteremia etiology helps rationalize therapy, revealing the spectrum of bacterial infections and
