Shiga toxin and lipopolysaccharide induce platelet-leukocyte aggregates and tissue factor release, a thrombotic mechanism in hemolytic uremic syndrome. [PDF]
BACKGROUND:Aggregates formed between leukocytes and platelets in the circulation lead to release of tissue factor (TF)-bearing microparticles contributing to a prothrombotic state.

Enhancement of platelet response to immune complexes and IgG aggregates by lipid A-rich bacterial lipopolysaccharides. [PDF]
The effect of the common lipid moiety of bacterial LPS on secretion from washed human platelets has been studied. The lipid A-rich LPS of S. minnesota R595 and a lipid A preparation both potentiated platelet serotonin secretion in response to IgG ...

In vitro-derived platelets: the challenges we will have to face to assess quality and safety
Platelet transfusions are given to patients in hospital who have a low blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia) either because of major bleeding (following trauma or surgery) or because the bone marrow production of platelets is impaired often due to ...

The Immobilization of Hyaluronic Acid in 3D Hydrogel Scaffolds Modulates Macrophage Polarization
This study explores the use of collagen‐hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels for the 3D culture of macrophages, providing a useful tool for modelling macrophage behavior in tissues and diseases. It highlights how hydrogel composition, mechanical properties, and preparation methods influence macrophage behavior, revealing for the first time that HA's ...

LIN28B Promotes Cancer Cell Dissemination and Angiogenesis
Children diagnosed with high‐risk neuroblastoma have a 5‐year event‐free survival rate of less than 50% and poor outcomes after recurrence. Deregulation of the LIN28B oncogene can be addressed in these patients. Upregulation of LIN28B is shown to support the metastatic cascade.

Erythrocytes morphology and hemorheology in severe bacterial infection [PDF]
BACKGROUND Severe bacterial infections initiate inadequate inflammation that leads to disseminated intravascular coagulation and death. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of bacterial infection on blood viscosity and red blood cells (RBCs ...

THE RATE OF REGENERATION OF BLOOD PLATELETS [PDF]
By repeatedly withdrawing, defibrinating, and reinjecting blood, the platelet count in dogs can be reduced to an extremely low level. When the reduction in platelets and fibrinogen has been carried to an extreme degree the animals display a marked tendency to bleed.

A Process-Oriented Architecture for Complex System Modelling [PDF]
A fine-grained massively-parallel process-oriented model of platelets (potentially artificial) within a blood vessel is presented. This is a CSP inspired design, expressed and implemented using the occam-pi language. It is part of the TUNA pilot study on

In vitro cancer models are advantageous for studying important processes such as tumorigenesis, cancer growth, invasion, and metastasis. The complexity and biological relevance increase depending on the model structure, organization, and composition of materials and cells.
