Bone-forming tumors are defined by neoplastic cells that differentiate along the lines of osteoblasts that deposit neoplastic bone. The morphology and biological spectrum of bone-forming tumors is broad, and their accurate diagnosis requires the careful correlation of their clinical, morphologic, and radiologic characteristics.

In this paper we provide an overview of benign and malignant osteogenic bone tumors. We describe the diagnostic features, radiographic findings, and pertinent ancillary studies needed to diagnose these bone-forming lesions. We begin with osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma, which are histologically bland and eminently benign with rare possible exceptions.

Musculoskeletal tumors are uncommon and when they occur usually benign. The diagnosis of these tumors is often delayed. Early detection of a malignant tumor may not only make the difference between life and death, but also may allow for successful limb salvage surgery rather than amputation of the limb.

Malignant bone tumors represent a small percentage of cancers nationwide and also are much less common than malignant soft-tissue tumors. The rarity of the condition makes it imperative that orthopaedic surgeons in nononcologic practices are able to recognize the symptoms that suggest a possible bony malignancy to avoid inappropriate or delayed ...

Recent scholarship on enchondroma, chondrosarcoma, and chondroblastoma is presented. The focus of this article is on the imaging appearance of these tumors and the means by which they can be distinguished from one another by both clinical and imaging criteria.

We present a review of several bone (osteoid)-forming tumors including enostosis, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, and osteosarcoma. These entities were chosen because they are reasonably common-neither seen every day nor rare. When applicable, recent information about the lesions is included.

Myoepithelial tumors (METs) of bone (BMETs) are a rare but distinct tumor entity. METs that are cytologically benign are termed myoepitheliomas; METs with malignant histologic features are called myoepithelial carcinomas. BMETs have a wide age range, may involve any part of the skeleton, and have a variable spindle cell and epithelioid morphology. Bone

Experimental Bone Tumors as Models of Human Bone Tumors
Pathology - Research and Practice, 1979Experimental models of human bone tumors may be classified as causal, descriptive, and selective models. These models are useful for analyzing the morphology, biology, and therapy of human bone tumors. The application of these models, however, requires us to define clearly the questions to be answered and to consider the special features of ...

Vascular tumors of the bone represent a variety of neoplasms, ranging from benign hemangiomas and epithelioid hemangiomas to intermediate grade hemangioendotheliomas to frankly malignant angiosarcomas. Over the years, there has been considerable debate concerning the aggressivity, nomenclature, and mere existence of various nosologic entities, due to ...

There is little information in the literature concerning the role of bone scanning in benign bone neoplasms except for sporadic reports. Since the advent of 99mTc-polyphosphate, bone imaging has proven feasible and useful in locating the cause of bone pain, such as in osteoid osteomas, which are not always radiologically apparent, and in evaluating ...
