Rat heart cannot synthesize docosahexaenoic acid from circulating α-linolenic acid because it lacks elongase-2

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2008
The extent to which the heart can convert α-linolenic acid (α-LNA, 18:3n-3) to longer chain n-3 PUFAs is not known. Conversion rates can be measured in vivo using radiolabeled α-LNA and a kinetic fatty acid model.

Resistance to thyroid hormone induced tachycardia in RTHα syndrome

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Mutations in thyroid hormone receptor α1 (TRα1) cause Resistance to Thyroid Hormone α (RTHα), a disorder characterized by hypothyroidism in TRα1-expressing tissues including the heart.

Exercise Capacity, Physical Activity, Fatigue, and Neurocognitive Function in Adult Survivors of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at risk of reduced exercise capacity, decreased physical activity levels, persistent fatigue, and neurocognitive deficits. The aim was to investigate exercise capacity and physical activity levels of adult survivors of childhood ALL and their associations with ...

An MRI, SPECT and Neuropsychological Study of a Patient Presenting with Capgras Syndrome

open access: yesBehavioural Neurology, 1994
A 25 year old male patient presented with the “delusion of doubles” (Capgras syndrome). The patient underwent detailed neuropsychological, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigations.

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Wnt activation of immortalized brain endothelial cells as a tool for generating a standardized model of the blood brain barrier in vitro [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Reproducing the characteristics and the functional responses of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in vitro represents an important task for the research community, and would be a critical biotechnological breakthrough.

Impaired thyroid hormone receptor signaling in anterior hypothalamic parvalbumin neurons causes bradycardia in male mice

open access: yesEuropean Thyroid Journal
Thyroid hormone receptor α1 (TRα1) regulates body temperature and heart rate in humans and mice. In addition to its direct actions in target tissues, it also affects peripheral functions indirectly through the brain.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
