We present event-driven simulation results for single and multiple intruders in a vertically vibrated granular bed. Under our vibratory conditions, the mean vertical position of a single intruder is governed primarily by a buoyancylike effect. Multiple intruders also exhibit buoyancy governed behavior; however, multiple neutrally buoyant intruders ...

Reversing the Brazil Nut Effect
The European Physical Journal E, 2005We propose a lattice model for studying the Brazil Nut Effect (BNE), i.e. the phase segregation occurring when a granular material is vertically shaked. The model considers the tap intensity and the mobility mu of the grains as the main physical parameters.

Simulations of intruder particles in a vertically vibrated granular bed suggest that neutrally-buoyant intruders are attracted to one another (Phys. Rev. Lett., 93 (2004) 208002). The simulations, however, ignore important physical effects such as friction and convection which are known to influence intruder behaviour.

Aflatoxins and fluorescence in Brazil nuts and pistachio nuts
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1992Brazil nut and pistachio nut samples from lots known to be contaminated with aflatoxins were visually inspected in detail. Kernels were split lengthwise in halves, and internally highly discolored kernels were analyzed individually. Highly contaminated Brazil nut kernels showed yellow fluorescence if illuminated with light at 360 nm.

Abstract It has been known for some time that Brazil nuts have a high barium content and their natural radioactivity is the highest among foodstuff grown in areas of normal radiation background. Samples of Brazil nuts of known origin, as well as various parts of their trees, were obtained from different regions of the Amazon valley and analyzed for ...
