Prognostic Utility of the Preoperative Cachexia Index in Patients Undergoing Emergency Laparotomy

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery
Aim Emergency laparotomy is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. The cachexia index, an objective index that incorporates muscle mass, nutrition, and inflammation, has been shown to predict outcomes in patients with cancer.

Reconstructing Quantum Dot Surfaces via Dual‐Functional Ligand Pairing Enables Efficient Shortwave Infrared Optoelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a ligand‐pairing strategy that reconstructs lead sulfide quantum dot surfaces for efficient short‐wave infrared optoelectronics. A low‐reactivity thiourea precursor combined with hydrobromic acid enables monodisperse and fully passivated quantum dots.

Longitudinal Body Composition Identifies Hepatocellular Carcinoma With Cachexia Following Combined Immunotherapy and Target Therapy (CHANCE2213)

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle
Background Cancer cachexia can impact prognosis, cause resistance to anticancer treatments and affect the tolerability of treatments. This study aims to identify hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cachexia by characterizing longitudinal body composition

Tough and Skin‐Free Porous Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogels via Salt‐Induced Aqueous Phase Separation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling counterion exchange rate during aqueous phase separation enables the formation of skin‐free, homogeneously porous polyelectrolyte complex hydrogels by suppressing kinetically trapped skin layers and macrovoids. The resulting hydrogel networks exhibit exceptional toughness (∼15 MJ·m−3) and enable 3D (bio)printing and post‐functionalization ...

Make‐Use‐Remake: Toward Indefinite Low‐Temperature Material Loops

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a regenerable materials platform built from microparticles bound by a temperature‐responsive polymer shell, enabling strong, processable structures from diverse feedstocks. The material is shaped at low temperatures (80°C) using common manufacturing methods and reprocessed repeatedly in the presence of water, demonstrating stable ...

Microfluidic Nano‐Assembly of Red‐Blood‐Cell (RBC) Lipids and Components for Engineering Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered red blood cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (eRBCEVs) are synthesized via controlled microfluidic assembly from native RBC lipids, enabling tunable encapsulation of proteins, nucleic acids, nanoparticles, and viral vectors. The platform demonstrates reproducible nanoscale architecture, preserved membrane composition, and functional cargo ...

Cardiac Cachexia and the Associations to the Microbiome: State‐of‐the‐Science Review

open access: yesJCSM Communications
Background Cardiac cachexia is a late manifestation of advanced heart failure, with a 5%–15% prevalence. A diagnosis of cardiac cachexia is not simply another complication of heart failure; clinical consequences of cachexia are impaired physical function,
