Caco‐2 Cells as a Model for Intestinal Absorption

Current Protocols in Toxicology, 2011
AbstractThe Caco‐2 cell system, a well characterized intestinal in vitro model, makes it possible to evaluate the ability of chemicals to cross the intestinal barrier, as well as to study their transport mechanisms. Permeability values estimated with this model correlate well with human in vivo absorption data for many drugs and chemicals.

Endogenous lipase activity in Caco-2 cells

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1998
Dietary triglycerides, the major precursors of long chain fatty acids (FA), require hydrolysis by pancreatic enzymes prior to their absorption by the small intestine. Although Caco-2 cells are frequently employed for the study of enterocyte lipid metabolism, the presence of an endogenous lipase activity has never been previously reported.

Oxidative stress of alternariol in Caco-2 cells

Toxicology Letters, 2014
Alternariol (AOH) is a mycotoxin produced by fungus Alternaria. It is found in a wide variety of fruits and cereals products. AOH is able to damage human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of AOH in human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells.

ERGOVALINE MOVEMENT ACROSS CACO-2 CELLS

In Vitro Cellular and Developmental Biology--Animal, 2005
Ergovaline's role in the direct causation of fescue toxicosis first requires establishment of its dietary absorption. Therefore, ergovaline movement across human intestinal cells was assessed using Caco-2 cells derived from human colon carcinoma. A pre-equilibrated mixture of ergovaline/ergovalinine (60:40 ratio of isomers) was added to the apical ...

Bacteroides fragilis adherence to Caco-2 cells

Anaerobe, 2002
The ability of ten Bacteroides fragilis strains isolated from intestinal and non-intestinal infections, normal flora and environment to adhere to human colon carcinoma cells, Caco-2, was examined. The adherence capacity varied among the strains tested from strongly adherent (76-100%) to non- or weakly adherent (0-25%). Negative staining with Indian ink

Caco-2 replace or refine?

Drug Discovery Today: Technologies, 2004
Multiple screening techniques have been developed to gain simplicity and rapidness in prediction of human intestinal permeability. The most extensively used method for years has been the Caco-2 cell monolayers. Are the less time- and resource-consuming artificial membranes and computational-based predictions on their way to replace the Caco-2 cells ...

The role of CDX2 in Caco-2 cell differentiation

European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, 2013
CDX2 plays a key part in the differentiation of Caco-2 cells, a colon carcinoma derived cell line that undergoes spontaneous differentiation. The effect of CDX2 expression in Caco-2 cells over time in culture has not been studied yet on a genome-wide level. The impact of CDX2 expression on the genomic profile of Caco-2 cells was studied by transducing ...

Characteristics of Ceftibuten Uptake into Caco-2 Cells

Pharmaceutical Research, 1994
The characteristics of ceftibuten uptake into Caco-2 cells grown in a collagen-coated dish were examined. Ceftibuten showed stereoselective and pH-dependent uptake. The pH-dependency of ceftibuten was more marked than that of cefaclor or cephalexin, but all three antibiotics showed maximal uptake at pH 5.5.

Modulation of butyrate transport in Caco-2 cells

Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, 2008
The aim of this study was to investigate the putative influence of some pharmacological agents and drugs of abuse upon the apical uptake of butyrate (BT) into Caco-2 cells. The apical uptake of (14)C-BT by Caco-2 cells was (1) time and concentration dependent, (2) pH dependent, (3) Na(+) independent and Cl(-) dependent, (4) energy dependent, (5 ...

EGF Stimulates Polyamine Uptake in Caco-2 Cells

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1995
We investigated the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on polyamine uptake in Caco-2 cell monolayers. Cells were grown until confluence (day 7) or until differentiation (day 14). Polyamine uptake into Caco-2 cells was stimulated by EGF in a dose-dependent manner. Both basal and EGF-stimulated uptake rates were higher in 7- than in 14-day-old Caco-
