Extracellular vesicles in pharmacology: Innovations in drug delivery and therapeutic applications in cancer

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a diverse population of membrane nanoparticles secreted by nearly all cell types, playing a key role in intercellular communication by transferring bioactive macromolecular cargo. In cancer, EVs shape both the local tumour microenvironment and distant premetastatic niches.

Methyl 4‐O‐Demethylbarbatate Destabilises HIF‐1α and Enhances Temozolomide Sensitivity in Glioma Cells

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
The lichen‐derived metabolite methyl 4‐O‐demethylbarbatate (Me‐4‐O‐DBA) suppresses glioma stemness, motility, and metabolic plasticity through inhibition of HIF‐1α signaling and synergistically enhances temozolomide activity, highlighting a potential strategy to target stemness‐driven therapeutic resistance in glioma.

Physiological media and oxygen levels modulate cancer hallmarks in cultured breast cancer cells

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
MCF7 breast cancer cells were cultured in standard conditions (18% O2 and DMEM) and physiological conditions (5% O2 and Plasmax, a medium modeled after the human plasma metabolome). A combined transcriptomic and proteomic approach was used to identify gene expression signatures at the mRNA and protein levels upstream of functional enrichment analyses ...

Comprehensive gene expression analysis of organoid-derived healthy human colonic epithelium and cancer cell line stimulated with live probiotic bacteria

open access: yesScientific Reports
The large intestine has a dense milieu of indigenous bacteria, generating a complex ecosystem with crosstalk between individual bacteria and host cells.

Periodontitis and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Mechanistic Evidence

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This review aims to provide a conceptual framework for understanding the mechanistic interplay between periodontitis and IBD, with a particular emphasis on the microbial and immunological crosstalk linking the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract.

Antibiotic‐mediated immune modulation in periodontitis

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting structures of the teeth. Although initiated by dysbiotic microbial communities, its progression is largely driven by the host's uncontrolled inflammatory response. While antibiotics have conventionally been employed in periodontitis therapy for their antimicrobial ...

Maternal nutrition as a key determinant of placental and developing blood–brain barrier xenobiotic protective functions

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Suboptimal maternal nutrition alters placental and developing blood–brain barrier (BBB) protective function and is associated with increased fetal brain vulnerability. In the placenta, nutritional adversity may reduce the exchange surface area and promote meta‐inflammation, compromising barrier efficiency in a model‐ and context ...

microRNA‐145‐5p regulates P‐glycoprotein and breast cancer resistance protein in primary human fetal brain endothelial cells

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Drug transporters P‐glycoprotein (P‐gp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) at the blood–brain barrier (BBB) protect the rapidly developing fetal brain. We investigated the role of microRNA‐145‐5p (miR‐145‐5p) microRNA (miRNA) in regulating these key transporters in primary human fetal brain endothelial cells in vitro. We

Bisphenol Analog‐Induced Cytotoxicity: Unraveling Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress and Apoptotic Pathways

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, Volume 46, Issue 12, Page 4782-4798, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Bisphenol A (BPA) is increasingly replaced by structural analogs, yet their safety remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigated whether BPA and selected analogs, bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol AP (BPAP), bisphenol P (BPP), and bisphenol E (BPE), induce cytotoxicity through activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and ...
