The human intestinal Caco-2 cell line has been extensively used over the last twenty years as a model of the intestinal barrier. The parental cell line, originally obtained from a human colon adenocarcinoma, undergoes in culture a process of spontaneous differentiation that leads to the formation of a monolayer of cells, expressing several ...

Bacteroides fragilis adherence to Caco-2 cells
Anaerobe, 2002The ability of ten Bacteroides fragilis strains isolated from intestinal and non-intestinal infections, normal flora and environment to adhere to human colon carcinoma cells, Caco-2, was examined. The adherence capacity varied among the strains tested from strongly adherent (76-100%) to non- or weakly adherent (0-25%). Negative staining with Indian ink

The role of CDX2 in Caco-2 cell differentiation
European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, 2013CDX2 plays a key part in the differentiation of Caco-2 cells, a colon carcinoma derived cell line that undergoes spontaneous differentiation. The effect of CDX2 expression in Caco-2 cells over time in culture has not been studied yet on a genome-wide level. The impact of CDX2 expression on the genomic profile of Caco-2 cells was studied by transducing ...

Characteristics of Ceftibuten Uptake into Caco-2 Cells
Pharmaceutical Research, 1994The characteristics of ceftibuten uptake into Caco-2 cells grown in a collagen-coated dish were examined. Ceftibuten showed stereoselective and pH-dependent uptake. The pH-dependency of ceftibuten was more marked than that of cefaclor or cephalexin, but all three antibiotics showed maximal uptake at pH 5.5.

Modulation of butyrate transport in Caco-2 cells
Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, 2008The aim of this study was to investigate the putative influence of some pharmacological agents and drugs of abuse upon the apical uptake of butyrate (BT) into Caco-2 cells. The apical uptake of (14)C-BT by Caco-2 cells was (1) time and concentration dependent, (2) pH dependent, (3) Na(+) independent and Cl(-) dependent, (4) energy dependent, (5 ...

EGF Stimulates Polyamine Uptake in Caco-2 Cells
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1995We investigated the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on polyamine uptake in Caco-2 cell monolayers. Cells were grown until confluence (day 7) or until differentiation (day 14). Polyamine uptake into Caco-2 cells was stimulated by EGF in a dose-dependent manner. Both basal and EGF-stimulated uptake rates were higher in 7- than in 14-day-old Caco-

Evaluation of an accelerated Caco-2 cell permeability model
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2000An accelerated 3-7-day Caco-2 cell permeability model was examined and compared to the traditional 21-25-day model. Caco-2 cell permeability coefficients (P(Caco-2)) of 33 structurally diverse small molecular weight compounds from apical to basolateral (AP-->BL) direction in the accelerated model were approximately twice those in the traditional model.

Regulation of NHE3 by nitric oxide in Caco-2 cells
American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 2002The effect of nitric oxide (NO) on Na+/H+exchange (NHE) activity was investigated utilizing Caco-2 cells as an experimental model. Incubation of Caco-2 cells with 10−3M S-nitroso- N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), a conventional donor of NO, for 20 min resulted in a ∼45% dose-dependent decrease in NHE activity, as determined by assay of ...

Osmotic stress, a proinflammatory signal in Caco-2 cells
Biochimie, 2004Hyper- (450 mOsm/l) and hypoosmotic exposure (150 mOsm/l) of Caco-2 cells, a human intestinal epithelial cell line, induced a twofold- and a fivefold increase in the production of IL-8, a constitutively expressed cytokine, respectively. This was observed both in the presence or in the absence of added proinflammatory cytokines and the stimulatory ...

Stereoselectivity of the reduced folate carrier in Caco‐2 cells
Chirality, 2005AbstractStereoselectivity of the human reduced folate carrier (RFC1) was examined in Caco‐2 cells using methotrexate (l‐amethopterin or l‐MTX) and its antipode (d‐amethopterin or d‐MTX) as model substrates. The initial uptake rate of folic acid (FA) was concentration dependent, with a Km value of approximately 0.6 μM. The Eadie–Hofstee plot of the RFC1‐
