The gut microbiota is capable of secreting bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs), which can carry cytoplasmic components, including enzymes and nucleic acids. BEVs have the ability to penetrate the intestinal epithelial barrier, enter the circulatory system and ultimately reach the heart.
