ConBr, a Lectin from Canavalia brasiliensis Seeds, Protects Against Quinolinic Acid-Induced Seizures in Mice

Neurochemical Research, 2011
Lectins are proteins capable of reversible binding to carbohydrates or glycoconjugates. In the central nervous system of mammals, lectins with affinity for mannose/glucose or galactose can modulate cellular communication. ConBr, a lectin isolated from the seeds of Canavalia brasiliensis, previously showed antidepressant effect in the forced swimming ...

Partitioning ofCanavalia brasiliensisLectin in Polyethylene Glycol – Sodium Citrate Aqueous Two-Phase Systems

Separation Science and Technology, 2010
The partitioning of Canavalia brasiliensis (ConBr) lectin from Canavalia brasiliensis seeds was carried out in aqueous two-phase systems composed of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sodium citrate. The effect of PEG molecular weight (600, 1000, 2000, and 3350), pH (6.0, 7.0, and 8.0) and ionic strength (0, 2, 5, and 10% NaCl) on the partition behavior of ...

Antidepressant-like effect of Canavalia brasiliensis (ConBr) lectin in mice: Evidence for the involvement of the glutamatergic system

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 2014
Lectins recognize and reversibly bind to carbohydrates attached to proteins and lipids modulating a variety of signaling pathways. We previously showed that ConBr, a lectin from Canavalia brasiliensis seeds, produced an antidepressant-like effect in mice by modulating the monoaminergic neurotransmitter systems.

Opioid‐like antinociceptive effects of oral administration of a lectin purified from the seeds ofCanavalia brasiliensis

Fundamental & Clinical Pharmacology, 2011
AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of a lectin fromCanavalia brasiliensis(ConBr) when administered orally to murine models of chemical and thermal nociception. ConBr up to 100 mg/kg produced significant and dose‐dependent antinociceptive effects: 81% reduction in abdominal writhing induced by 0.6% acetic ...

Partitioning and recovery of Canavalia brasiliensis lectin by aqueous two-phase systems using design of experiments methodology

Separation and Purification Technology, 2010
The performance of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) composed by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)- and different salts (sodium citrate, potassium phosphate, sodium sulfate and ammonium sulfate) has been evaluated and compared for the selective isolation of Canavalia brasilienses lectin (ConBr) from crude extracts of C. brasilienses seeds.

ConBr, a lectin fromCanavalia brasiliensisseeds, modulates signaling pathways and increases BDNF expression probably via a glycosylated target

Journal of Molecular Recognition, 2014
In the central nervous system, many receptors, ion channels and neurotransmitter transporters are glycoproteins, where the glycan chains are modulator elements. Lectins are proteins, which recognize and bind carbohydrate complexes. We have previously shown that ConBr, a lectin purified fromCanavalia brasiliensisseeds, produced antidepressant‐like ...
