Cancer incidence and mortality in Portugal.

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Cancer, 2003
In this paper, we present estimates of national cancer incidence in Portugal in 1996-1998, predictions for the year 2000, and interpret the recent cancer mortality trends in light of observations from epidemiological research and risk factor patterns. In

Cancer incidence in hypertensives [PDF]

open access: yesCancer, 1987
Cancer incidence was measured over a 5-year period (1978 to 1982) in 4067 hypertensive patients, and 10,366 normotensive patients from general practices in southwestern Ontario. For cancer of all sites an elevated incidence was found among hypertensive patients.

Integrated single-cell transcriptome analysis reveals heterogeneity of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma microenvironment

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
The microenvironment of oesophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCC) is heterogeneous and can strongly impact response to treatment. Here, the authors characterize the ESCC tumour microenvironment with single-cell RNA-seq, finding CST1 + myofibroblasts ...

Aberrant activation of CYR61 enhancers in colorectal cancer development

open access: yesJournal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research, 2019
Background High expression of secreted matricellular protein cysteine-rich 61 (CYR61) correlates with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC). Aberrant enhancer activation has been shown to correlate with expression of key genes involved in cancer ...

Resveratrol induces autophagy-dependent apoptosis in HL-60 cells

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2018
Background All known mechanisms of apoptosis induced by resveratrol act through cell cycle arrest and changes in mitochondrial membrane potential. It is currently unknown whether resveratrol-induced apoptosis is associated with other physiological ...

Protein-coding genes combined with long noncoding RNA as a novel transcriptome molecular staging model to predict the survival of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesCancer Communications, 2018
Background Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the predominant subtype of esophageal carcinoma in China. This study was to develop a staging model to predict outcomes of patients with ESCC.

Interplay and cooperation between SREBF1 and master transcription factors regulate lipid metabolism and tumor-promoting pathways in squamous cancer

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
The relevance and underlying molecular mechanisms of epigenetic regulation in squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) await further characterization. Here, the authors show a transcriptional regulatory loop involving SREBF1, TP63 and KLF5 driving tumourigenesis ...
