SPG4 Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia: From Etiology to Therapy

open access: yesMovement Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) comprise a heterogeneous group of heritable neurodegenerative disorders resulting from mutations in a wide variety of genes. HSP locomotor symptoms include lower limb weakness and spasticity that arise from progressive degeneration of corticospinal axons projecting from the motor cortex to the distal ...

Advances and challenges in experimental models for Epstein–Barr virus research

open access: yesmLife, EarlyView.
Abstract Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), the first identified human oncovirus, is a ubiquitous γ‐herpesvirus etiologically linked to diverse malignancies, lymphoproliferative disorders, and autoimmune diseases. Experimental models are pivotal for unraveling the infection and pathogenesis mechanisms, life cycle regulation, as well as development and ...

Sensitive detection systems for infectious agents in xenotransplantation*

open access: yesXenotransplantation, EarlyView., 2020
Abstract Xenotransplantation of pig cells, tissues, or organs may be associated with transmission of porcine microorganisms, first of all of viruses, to the transplant recipient, potentially inducing a disease (zoonosis). I would like to define detection systems as the complex of sample generation, sample preparation, sample origin, time of sampling ...

Dynamic early biomarkers predict outcomes in pediatric Epstein–Barr virus‐associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
This study elucidates the critical pathogenic mechanisms of pediatric Epstein–Barr virus‐associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV‐HLH), where EBV infection triggers a cytokine storm leading to immune cell hyperactivation and tissue damage. Dynamic plasma biomarkers (EBV‐DNA, ferritin, and interferon‐γ) effectively predict treatment response ...

Enterovirus infections in children

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
Enteroviruses (EVs) are major pathogens causing a wide spectrum of diseases in children worldwide. This review summarizes the epidemiology, virology, viral replication, and virus‐host interactions of EVs. It also highlights current advances in clinical diagnosis, antiviral therapies, and vaccine development, providing insights into future strategies ...

Rounded Monodisperse Fluorescent Nanodiamonds

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Nanodiamond (ND) shape control using rapid molten‐nitrate etching is studied as a scale‐up method for monodispersed rounded particles. Optimal etching condition (567°C for 6 min) yields NDs with atomically stepped surfaces and reduced sp2 content. Compared to angular control, rounded NDs exhibit an increased proportion of luminescent particles (66% vs.
