Spatiotemporal and genomic analysis of carbapenem resistance elements in Enterobacterales from hospital inpatients and natural water ecosystems of an Irish city

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) is a diverse group of often multidrug-resistant organisms. Surveillance and control of infections are complicated due to the inter-species spread of carbapenemase-encoding genes (CEGs) on mobile genetic ...

Carbapenemases in Enterobacteriaceae: the magnitude of a worldwide concern [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Microbiology and Infection, 2014
Although carbapenemases in Enterobacteriaceae were relatively rare a decade ago, their emergence and rapid spread is now an alarming worldwide problem, for both the scientific and public health communities [1]. In the present theme issue, we provide an overview of the different factors that probably explain the spread and success of the main ...

Klebsiella pneumoniaeCarbapenemase, Canada [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2009
To the Editor: Carbapenems are used to treat life-threatening infections caused by extremely drug-resistant gram-negative pathogens; these drugs represent the last line of defense in the antimicrobial drug armamentarium against serious or invasive infection (1). The rapid global spread of Klebsiella pneumoniae that produces K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (

Wide spread of carbapenemase-producing bacterial isolates in a Nigerian environment

open access: yesJournal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance, 2020
Objectives: The presence of carbapenemase-producing bacterial isolates is found not only in hospital and community settings but also in the environment.

In vitro activity of cefiderocol against carbapenemase-producing and meropenem-non-susceptible Gram-negative bacteria collected in the Japan Antimicrobial Resistant Bacterial Surveillance

open access: yesJournal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance
Objectives: The treatment options available for infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens are often limited. Cefiderocol (CFDC) is a novel siderophore cephalosporin that exhibits activity against these pathogens.

Porin‐Independent Uptake of Small Molecule Antibiotics Facilitated by Escherichia coli Outer Membrane Vesicles

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) can enhance antibiotic delivery into Gram‐negative bacteria by bypassing porin‐dependent uptake. Encapsulation of imipenem in OMVs significantly increased its effectiveness against multidrug‐resistant clinical isolates, highlighting OMVs as a promising platform for overcoming permeability ...

Carbapenemase-Producing Organisms: A Global Scourge [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2017
The dramatic increase in the prevalence and clinical impact of infections caused by bacteria producing carbapenemases is a global health concern. Carbapenemase production is especially problematic when encountered in members of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

Efficacy of Essential Oil of Algrizea minor Sobral, Faria & Proença (Myrtaceae) in Combating Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus: Antibacterial and Virulence Modulation Studies Conducted In Vitro and In Vivo

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, EarlyView.
This study explored the antibacterial, antivirulence, and in vivo effects of Algrizea minor essential oil (EOAM), against MRSA isolates. Chemical analysis by GC‐MS has been performed. The oil exhibited synergistic effects when combined with amoxicillin and oxacillin, inhibiting biofilm formation and reducing S. aureus‐induced hemolysis.
