Effects of feeding almond hulls to light lambs on carcass characteristics and meat quality
Abstract BACKGROUND Almond hulls (AH) are the main by‐product of almond processing for human consumption and contain bioactive compounds that can improve meat quality. Although AH are used as feed for dairy cows in some countries, information on their potential effects on meat quality is limited.

Body composition estimated by bioelectrical impedance analyses is diminished by prenatal stress in neonatal lambs and by heat stress in feedlot wethers [PDF]
Body composition correlates to carcass value in livestock, which makes the ability to accurately estimate body composition in the live animal beneficial (Berg and Marchello, 1994).

Seasonal Variation in Carcass Characteristics of Korean Cattle Steers
Climate temperature affects animal production. This study was conducted to evaluate whether climatic conditions affect beef carcass characteristics of Korean cattle steers. The monthly carcass characteristics of Korean cattle steers (n = 2,182,415) for 8 yr (2006 through 2013) were collected from the Korean Institute for Animal Products Quality ...

ABSTRACT Lions (Panthera leo) are apex predators with a well‐documented influence on ecological dynamics, yet their potential role as bone‐accumulating agents remains poorly understood and often debated. Previous taphonomic studies have largely attributed bone accumulations in African savannah ecosystems to other carnivores, such as spotted hyenas ...

Optical Characteristics of Deep Pectoral Myopathy in Turkey Carcasses
When eviscerated turkey carcasses are illuminated with white light from a 100 W lamp in the body cavity dorsal to the sternum, about 90% of carcasses with deep pectoral myopathy can be detected subjectively. With this method, subjective detection is more reliable than photometric detection.

ABSTRACT Sharp force trauma (SFT) is the main criterion used to identify chop mark butchery in zooarchaeology, yet its reliability as a diagnostic feature has not been systematically tested. Chop marks reflect both cutting and fracturing processes and exhibit characteristics of both sharp and blunt trauma.

Fruit use and fruit processing by euphonias, specialized avian frugivores
Euphonias (Neotropical passerines in the genera Euphonia and Chlorophonia) form the quintessential example of a specialized avian frugivore, combining a high reliance on fruit as food and the restriction of fruit taxa exploited. To understand their specialization, we explored the integration of fruit morphological and nutritional traits with their ...

Genetic aspects of calving, growth, and carcass traits in beef cattle [PDF]
The aim of this thesis was to learn more about the genetic background of calving, growth and carcass traits of beef cattle breeds in Sweden, and to assess the possibility of including calving traits and commercial carcass traits in the genetic evaluation.

Abstract The expansion of grey wolves (Canis lupus) across the western United States, including on public lands used for extensive livestock grazing, requires tools and techniques for reducing wolf–livestock conflict and supporting coexistence. We examined approaches used on forested lands managed by the U.S.
