Assessment of two minimally invasive methodologies for sex identification in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla

Abstract Sex is an important driver of variation in behaviour, ecology and physiology. Sex identification in the Critically Endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla) currently requires fish sacrifice, or the use of morphological differences such as body length, which can be inaccurate in certain habitats and at intermediate body lengths.

Comparative functional morphological study of the tarsal joint mobility in artiodactyls and perissodactyls in light of astragalar morphological differences

This study investigated how variations in the shape of the astragalus affect tarsal joint behavior, using CT scans. In artiodactyls with a double‐pulley astragalus, the calcaneus shifted plantarly during plantarflexion. This suggests the movement increases hindlimb functional length and contributes to enhanced running speed.

Validation of aerial photogrammetry methods to measure body size, condition and mass in small cetaceans

Abstract figure legend Unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV)‐based photogrammetry provides measurements equivalent to traditional hand measurements in bottlenose dolphins. Mass estimates derived from UAV measurements closely match the true body mass of live individuals.
