Effect of Dedifferentiation on Time to Mutation Acquisition in Stem Cell-Driven Cancers

open access: yes, 2013
Accumulating evidence suggests that many tumors have a hierarchical organization, with the bulk of the tumor composed of relatively differentiated short-lived progenitor cells that are maintained by a small population of undifferentiated long-lived ...

MicroRNA-141 suppresses prostate cancer stem cells and metastasis by targeting a cohort of pro-metastasis genes

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
MicroRNAs have important roles in regulating tumor development, progression and metastasis. Here, the authors demonstrate the tumor-suppressive functions of miRNA141 in prostate cancer stem cells mediated by directly targeting CD44, Rho GTPase protein ...

Glycemic index, nutrient density, and promotion of aberrant crypt foci in rat colon [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We speculated that a diet with a high glycemic index (GI), or a diet with a low nutrient density (nutrient-to-calorie ratio), would enhance colon carcinogenesis, presuma-bly via increased insulin resistance.

T25

open access: yesEJC Supplements, 2015
Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in treatment of many cancer types due to its ability to induce apoptosis in malignant cells in blood cancer therapy, and to prevent nausea, emesis and chemotherapy-associated hepatotoxicity in case of solid tumors ...

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Mangiferin: A Promising Anticancer Bioactive [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Of late, several biologically active antioxidants from natural products have been investigated by the researchers in order to combat the root cause of carcinogenesis, i.e., oxidative stress.

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

NRAS destines tumor cells to the lungs

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2017
The lungs are frequently affected by cancer metastasis. Although NRAS mutations have been associated with metastatic potential, their exact role in lung homing is incompletely understood.

Assessing the carcinogenic potential of low-dose exposures to chemical mixtures in the environment: the challenge ahead. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Lifestyle factors are responsible for a considerable portion of cancer incidence worldwide, but credible estimates from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) suggest that the fraction of cancers ...

Cadmium carcinogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesMutation Research - Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 2003
Cadmium is a heavy metal of considerable environmental and occupational concern. Cadmium compounds are classified as human carcinogens by several regulatory agencies. The most convincing data that cadmium is carcinogenic in humans comes from studies indicating occupational cadmium exposure is associated with lung cancer.
