Mutagens, Carcinogens, and Anti-Carcinogens
1982Mutagens and carcinogens in the environment represent a potential hazard, and it is important to screen large numbers of compounds and mixtures of compounds to which humans are exposed. However, it is Impractical for both technical and monetary reasons to do the bulk of mutagen screening by using mammals.

Abstract Lindane is highly carcinogenic in rats and mice. Lindane induced benign and malignant neoplasms at all sites in male and female rats. Benign and malignant neoplasms of the endocrine organs were also increased. Carcinomas of the adrenal and pituitary were increased markedly in male and female rats.

THE effects of various metals on living cells in tissue culture are being investigated in this Laboratory, and a non-lethal disturbance of normal mitosis produced in chick fibroblasts by cobalt (as chloride) has already been reported1. Abstract In confirmation of previous reports from this Institute, cholesterol has been shown to be carcinogenic. Highly purified cholesterol (Schwenk process), dissolved in olive oil by heating on the water-bath, was injected subcutaneously into 224 stock mice. Fourteen sarcomas were induced at the site of injection.

Abstract: Air pollution has been recognized as a cancer risk for many years. More than 2,800 different chemicals have been identified in the air or emission sources. Only about 10% of these chemicals have been evaluated in bioassays for genetic or carcinogenic effects.

Five studies of the carcinogenicity of the chlorinated pesticide Kepone (chlordecone) in animals were reviewed. Examination of histological sections showed that Kepone is unmistakably carcinogenic in rats and mice. Kepone induced malignant tumors in the liver of rats and mice in the National Cancer Institute studies and in the liver in rats in the ...

Dichlorvos, 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate, an organophosphate insecticide, is widely used for the control of agricultural, industrial, and domestic pests (Fig. 1) [1]. Dichlorvos is administered orally as an anthelmintic to swine, horses, cats, and dogs.

Abstract There has been one mouse and one rat study on the carcinogenicity and one dog study on the toxicity of the pesticide pronamide. Pronamide was carcinogenic for the liver of male mice. In addition, male mice developed severe diffuse hyperplasia and cholestasis of the liver, the latter an extremely rare lesion in the rodent liver. The pronamide
