Pharmacophagy in insects: Ecological and evolutionary perspectives on the non‐nutritional use of plant specialized metabolites

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 7, Page 661-673, July 2025.
Insects interact with plants not only for nutrition but also to actively seek plant specialized metabolites (PSMs) for chemical defense, reproduction, and self‐medication—a behavior known as pharmacophagy. This review examines how insects across diverse orders acquire PSMs from both food and non‐food plants for non‐nutritional benefits.

ZZE-Configuration of chromophore ß-153 in C-phycocyanin from Mastigocladus laminosus [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
The photochemistry of C-phycocyanin has been studied after denaturation in the dark. It shows an irreversible reaction which has characteristics of a Ζ,Ζ,Ε- to Z,Z,Z-isomerization of dihydrobilins. Its amplitude depends on the reaction conditions, with

Differential gene expression toward species of Aristolochia impairing the performance of the Troidini butterfly Battus polydamas

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 7, Page 696-707, July 2025.
We studied the response of Battus polydamas (Papilionidae) larvae fed on Aristolochia ringens (containing several diterpenes) and Aristolochia gigantea (containing sesquiterpenes and acyclic monoterpenoids but no diterpenoids or aristolochic acids). We assessed larval performance on fitness components such as survival and differential gene expression ...

12β,14-Dihydroxy-3-oxo-5β,20(22)-cardenolide monohydrate

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E, 2010
The title compound, digoxigenone, C23H30O5·H2O, was biotransformed from digoxigenin. In the crystal, intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds contribute to the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular structure.

Medicinal plants-based foods for breast cancer treatment: An ethnobotanical survey and digitization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
One million new breast cancer (BC) cases diagnosed yearly yielded over 400,000 annual deaths. About 4.4 million women are living with BC worldwide, while 15 million new cases yearly are estimated by 2020.

Cardiac Glycosides in Human Physiology and Disease: Update for Entomologists

open access: yesInsects, 2019
Cardiac glycosides, cardenolides and bufadienolides, are elaborated by several plant or animal species to prevent grazing or predation. Entomologists have characterized several insect species that have evolved the ability to sequester these glycosides in

Cardenolide-Induced Lysosomal Membrane Permeabilization Demonstrates Therapeutic Benefits in Experimental Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancers

open access: yesNeoplasia: An International Journal for Oncology Research, 2006
Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) are the leading cause of cancer deaths in most developed countries. Targeting heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) expression and function, together with the induction of lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP), could ...

Interspecific variation and elevated CO2 influence the relationship between plant chemical resistance and regrowth tolerance

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
To understand how comprehensive plant defense phenotypes will respond to global change, we investigated the legacy effects of elevated CO2 on the relationships between chemical resistance (constitutive and induced via mechanical damage) and regrowth ...

21-Benzylidene digoxin: a proapoptotic cardenolide of cancer cells that up-regulates Na,K-ATPase and epithelial tight junctions.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Cardiotonic steroids are used to treat heart failure and arrhythmia and have promising anticancer effects. The prototypic cardiotonic steroid ouabain may also be a hormone that modulates epithelial cell adhesion. Cardiotonic steroids consist of a steroid
