Effect of Four Crystalloid Cardioplegias on Immature Rabbit Hearts During Global Ischaemia

open access: yesAsian Journal of Surgery, 2006
Controversy surrounds the reported beneficial effects of crystalloid cardioplegic solutions in the immature myocardium. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of four clinical cardioplegic solutions in the immature myocardium to determine if ...

Adequate distribution of warm cardioplegic solution [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1995
Seventy-five patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting were randomized to receive warm antegrade (N = 25), warm retrograde (N = 25), or a combination of warm antegrade and retrograde (N = 25) delivery of blood cardioplegic solution. Myocardial oxygen utilization, lactate and acid metabolism, and adenine nucleotides and their degradation ...

St. Thomas Modified Cardioplegia Effects on Myoblasts’ Viability and Morphology

open access: yesMedicina, 2022
Background and Objectives: The cardioplegic arrest of the heart during cardiosurgical procedures is the crucial element of a cardioprotection strategy. Numerous clinical trials compare different cardioplegic solutions and cardioprotective protocols, but ...

Restricting excessive cardiac action potential and QT prolongation: a vital role for IKs in human ventricular muscle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Background - Although pharmacological block of the slow, delayed rectifier potassium current (I-Ks) by chromanol 293B, L-735,821, or HMR-1556 produces little effect on action potential duration (APD) in isolated rabbit and dog ventricular myocytes, the ...

Cardioplegic solution: A contamination crisis

open access: yesThe Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1986
Eleven patients were given varying doses of cardioplegic solution contaminated with Enterobacter cloacae. Five patients died. Early bleeding, necessitating reoperation, occurred in eight patients and a total of 126 units of blood and 203 units of platelets were given (range 2 to 19 and 15 to 47 units, respectively).

Human cardiac tissue in a microperfusion chamber simulating extracorporeal circulation - ischemia and apoptosis studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background After coronary artery bypass grafting ischemia/reperfusion injury inducing cardiomyocyte apoptosis may occur. This surgery-related inflammatory reaction appears to be of extreme complexity with regard to its molecular, cellular and tissue ...

The Role of Preservation Solutions upon Saphenous Vein Endothelial Integrity and Function: Systematic Review and UK Practice Survey

open access: yesCells, 2023
The long saphenous vein is the most used conduit in cardiac surgery, but its long-term patency is limited by vein graft disease (VGD). Endothelial dysfunction is a key driver of VGD; its aetiology is multi-factorial.
