Investigation of the cellular response to bone fractures: evidence for flexoelectricity [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports volume 10, Article number: 254 (2020), 2020
The recent discovery of bone flexoelectricity (electrical polarization induced by strain gradient) suggests that flexoelectricity could have physiological effects in bones, and specifically near bone fractures, where flexoelectricity is theoretically highest. Here, we report a cytological study of the interaction between crack stress and bone cells. We

Beneficial role of allicin from garlic in cervical cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Introduction: Cervical cancer remains a global health concern for females. Thus, in order to control cervical cancer, attempts are being made by researchers globally to somehow induce programmed cell death in the said cancerous cells.

FADD, Caspase-3, and Caspase-8 and Incidence of Coronary Events [PDF]

open access: yesArteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, 2017
Objective— To investigate the relationship between 3 markers of apoptosis, that is, FADD (Fas-associated death domain–containing protein), caspase-3, and caspase-8, and incidence of coronary events (CEs) in a population-based cohort study.

Impact of L-carnitine and selenium treatment on testicular apoptosis in rats exposed to 2.45 GHz microwave energy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Objective: It has been suggested that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) by wireless devices (2.45 GHz) induces testicular apoptosis. We investigated if supplemental selenium (Se) and L-carnitine may reduce this adverse effect.

Pro-caspase-3 Is a Major Physiologic Target of Caspase-8 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1998
The apoptotic signal triggered by ligation of members of the death receptor family is promoted by sequential activation of caspase zymogens. We show here that in a purified system, the initiator caspases-8 and -10 directly process the executioner pro-caspase-3 with activation rates (kcat/Km) of 8.7 x 10(5) and 2.8 x 10(5) M-1 s-1, respectively.

Apoptotic Volume Decrease (AVD) Is Independent of Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Initiator Caspase Activation

open access: yesCells, 2012
Persistent cell shrinkage is a major hallmark of apoptotic cell death. The early-phase shrinkage, which starts within 30−120 min after apoptotic stimulation and is called apoptotic volume decrease (AVD), is known to be accomplished by activation of K ...

Characterization of Canine Caspase-3

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medical Science, 2004
The canine caspase-3 gene was cloned and sequenced. The canine caspase-3 cDNA clone was 1473 base pairs in length and encoded 277 amino acids. The predicted amino acid sequence showed 88.4%, 88.0%, 85.9%, 65.9% and 60.6% homology with that of human, pig, mouse, chicken and zebra fish caspase-3, respectively.

Gasdermin pores permeabilize mitochondria to augment caspase-3 activation during apoptosis and inflammasome activation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Gasdermin E (GSDME/DFNA5) cleavage by caspase-3 liberates the GSDME-N domain, which mediates pyroptosis by forming pores in the plasma membrane.

Heat-shock pretreatment inhibits sorbitol-induced apoptosis in K562, U937 and HeLa cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of this study was to determine whether heat-shock pretreatment exerted a protective effect against sorbitol-induced apoptotic cell death in K562, U937 and HeLa cell lines and whether such protection was associated with a decreased cytochrome c

Caspase-3, Shears for Synapse Pruning [PDF]

open access: yesDevelopmental Cell, 2014
Motor neurons regulate neuromuscular junction formation by using agrin to stimulate acetylcholine receptor clustering and using acetylcholine to disperse unnecessary receptor clusters on muscle fibers. Wang et al. (2014) now report in this issue of Developmental Cell a critical role for caspase-3 in intracellular mechanisms of acetylcholine-induced ...
