Risks for human health related to the presence of plant lectins in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract The European Commission asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to assess the risk related to the presence of plant lectins in food. Based on the available evidence, the CONTAM Panel considered only phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), a legume lectin from beans (Phaseolus sp.), for the risk characterisation.

Speed Breeding Transgenic American Chestnut Trees Toward Restoration

open access: yesPlant Direct, Volume 9, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was a dominant, foundational forest canopy tree in eastern North America until an imported chestnut blight (caused by Cryphonectria parasitica) rendered it functionally extinct across its native range. Biotechnological approaches have the potential to help restore the species, but field‐based breeding ...

Structural and Functional Properties of Araucaria araucana and Araucaria angustifolia Seed Proteins as a Plant‐Based Food Source

open access: yesSustainable Food Proteins, Volume 3, Issue 4, December 2025.
Morphologically, A. angustifolia seeds were significantly larger, while A. araucana exhibited more regular, triangular shapes. Proximate composition revealed a carbohydrate‐rich profile in both species, with a significantly higher lipid content in A. araucana. Amino acid analysis showed similar profiles, with high levels of aspartic and glutamic acids.

New solvents for extracting gallic acid from chestnut shells: deep eutectic solvents

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, Volume 19, Issue 6, Page 2062-2075, November/December 2025.
Abstract Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) shell, a byproduct of chestnut processing, is a valuable source of phenolic compounds that have a range of industrial applications. This study investigated the optimization of gallic acid extraction from the outer shell of the chestnut using ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) and deep eutectic solvents (DES).

Long‐range pollen transport across the North Sea: Insights from migratory hoverflies landing on a remote oil rig

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 11, Page 2267-2281, November 2025.
This study identifies pollen from over 100 plant species—including wildflowers, food and crops—carried by hoverflies alighting onto an oilrig 200 km off the coast during seasonal migrations. Analysis of their movements indicates a huge potential to enhance long distance gene flow between plants and increase pollination services.

Localised patterns of wild bee abundance indicate woodlands play multiple roles in supporting farmland populations

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 18, Issue 6, Page 997-1012, November 2025.
Across 12 farmland sites, we deployed wild bee traps in deciduous woodland canopies and understories, and in an open habitat (at field margins) before and after canopy closure. Post‐canopy closure, understory activity (relative to field margins) generally decreased, but higher temperatures may have increased its likelihood.
