CD28 engagement by B7/BB-1 induces transient down-regulation of CD28 synthesis and prolonged unresponsiveness to CD28 signaling

The Journal of Immunology, 1993
Abstract Costimulatory molecules on the APC regulate T cell growth by providing signals that regulate responses to TCR occupancy. One such molecule is B7/BB-1, which triggers a T cell activation pathway by binding the CD28 and/or CTLA-4 cell-surface molecules.

Proliferation and apoptosis of human CD8+CD28+ and CD8+CD28− lymphocytes during aging

Experimental Gerontology, 2004
It is commonly believed that the age-related decrease in the ratio CD28(+)/CD28(-) among CD8(+) T cells reflects replicative senescence of the lymphocytes. To verify this claim we measured the proliferation of CD8(+)CD28(+) and CD8(+)CD28(-) subsets by flow cytometry after PHA treatment of mononuclear lymphocytes from donors of different age, including

CD28 - OLD DOG, NEW TRICKS: CD28 IN PLASMA CELL/MULTIPLE MYELOMA BIOLOGY

2008
The concept of a costimulatory signal requirement for immune cell activation has been attributed to Bretscher and Cohn, 7 who first proposed that B cell activation required two signals. This model was subsequently modified by Lafferty and Cunningham for T cell activation and allograft rejection.

Novel mechanism of signaling by CD28

Immunology Letters, 2010
Ligation of both the T cell receptor (TCR) and the CD28 receptor is required for full T cell activation to occur. Engagement of the TCR in primary T cells is followed by rapid cAMP production in lipid rafts and activation of the cAMP-protein kinase A (PKA)-Csk pathway inhibiting proximal T cell signaling.

Molecular characterization of Cynoglossus semilaevis CD28

Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2012
T lymphocyte activation requires a combination of signals, one of which is provided by interaction between CD28 and its ligands on antigen presenting cells. Although CD28-like sequences have been identified in a few teleosts, the function of fish CD28 is virtually unknown.

CD28-like role for a Toll

Nature Reviews Immunology, 2019
