Endothelial Cells in the Early Murine Yolk Sac Give Rise to CD41-expressing Hematopoietic Cells
Stem Cells and Development, 2005Hematopoietic and endothelial cells may be derived from a common precursor cell (hemangioblast) during embryogenesis; however, some evidence suggests that hematopoietic cells may emerge from endothelial cells. The onset of definitive hematopoiesis at E8.25 in the murine embryo is marked by high-level CD41 expression.

Early thrombocytopenia is a common hematological abnormality in sick neonates. Here, we examined the relationship between early thrombocytopenia in neonates and parameters associated with thrombopoiesis to identify predictive factors at birth.

An 11-month-old boy was transferred to our hospital because of fever and bleeding tendency on March 13, 1998. Laboratory studies showed a white blood cell count of 43,360/microliter with 75% blasts, a hemoglobin concentration of 8.4 g/dl, and a platelet count of 23 x 10(3)/microliter. Surface marker analysis with a flow cytometer revealed that only 21%
