Permeability of a Cell Membrane Junction [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Physiology, 1969
The ion permeability of the membrane junctions between Chironomus salivary gland cells is strongly depressed by treatments that are generally known to inhibit energy metabolism. These treatments include prolonged cooling at 6°–8°C, and exposure to dinitrophenol, cyanide, oligomycin, and N-ethylmaleimide.

Role of the mitochondrial membrane permeability transition in cell death [PDF]

open access: yesApoptosis: an International Journal on Programmed Cell Death, 2006
In recent years, the role of the mitochondria in both apoptotic and necrotic cell death has received considerable attention. An increase of mitochondrial membrane permeability is one of the key events in apoptotic or necrotic death, although the details of the mechanism involved remain to be elucidated.

Mitochondrial membrane permeability transition and cell death

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics, 2006
Mitochondria are important organelles for energy production, Ca2+ homeostasis, and cell death. In recent years, the role of the mitochondria in both apoptotic and necrotic cell death has received much attention. In apoptotic and necrotic death, an increase of mitochondrial membrane permeability is considered to be one of the key events, although the ...

Alpha-toxin induces programmed cell death of human T cells, B cells, and monocytes during USA300 infection. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
This investigation examines the influence of alpha-toxin (Hla) during USA300 infection of human leukocytes. Survival of an USA300 isogenic deletion mutant of hla (USA300Δhla) in human blood was comparable to the parental wild-type strain and ...
