Membranes by the Numbers [PDF]
Many of the most important processes in cells take place on and across membranes. With the rise of an impressive array of powerful quantitative methods for characterizing these membranes, it is an opportune time to reflect on the structure and function ...

Lens Cell Membrane Permeability and Cataract Formation.
SummaryAnalyses of rat lenses just before and just after the appearance of diabetic or galactose cataracts demonstrate that this event is accompanied by an abrupt disruption of the cell membranes of the lens. The concentrations of polyol, glucose and fructose in the lens approach those in the blood; and the extracellular space as determined with ...

Effect of proanthocyanidins on cell membrane properties of Saccharomyces cerevisiae [PDF]
In order to investigate the action mechanism of proanthocyanidins from the perspective of cell membrane, the effects of 0.5 g/L and 1.0 g/L proanthocyanidins on the characteristics of the cell membrane of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied.

Zeolite-filled silicone rubber membranes. Experimental determination of concentration profiles [PDF]
Permeant concentrations in silicalite-filled silicone rubber membranes during pervaporation of propanol/water mixtures were measured using multi-layered membranes.

Determination of cell membrane permeability in concentrated cell ensembles
The method of volume averaging is used to analyze the process of diffusion in concentrated cell ensembles in which significant resistance to mass transfer is caused by the cellular membrane. A general closure scheme is given that allows for direct theoretical prediction of effective diffusivities for any cellular geometry.

Volume changes during active shape fluctuations in cells [PDF]
Cells modify their volume in response to changes in osmotic pressure but it is usually assumed that other active shape variations do not involve significant volume fluctuations.

P2X7 Receptor Mediated Increase In Cell Membrane Permeability
Purinergic receptors consist of two main families; P2X and P2Y. P2Y receptors are G protein coupled receptors (GPCR), whereas P2X receptors are non-selective cation channels. P2X7 receptors which is a member of P2X receptors, have been found myriad types

Autophagic cell death is dependent on lysosomal membrane permeability through Bax and Bak
Cells deficient in the pro-death Bcl-2 family members Bax and Bak are known to be resistant to apoptotic cell death, and previous we have shown that these two effectors are also needed for mitochondrial-dependent cellular necrosis (Karch et al., 2013 ...

Permeability of the liver cell membrane to quinolinate [PDF]
Quinolinate was taken up by both rat and guinea-pig liver cells. Equilibrium was reached after approx. 20 min with rat cells, but guinea-pig cells had not achieved a steady state after 60 min. There was no evidence to suggest that quinolinate is rapidly metabolized by either species.

Non-enveloped viruses must deliver their viral genome across a cell membrane without the advantage of membrane fusion. The mechanisms used to achieve this remain poorly understood. Human rhinovirus, a frequent cause of the common cold, is a non-enveloped
