A multigene approach to identify the scorpion species (Arachnida: Scorpiones) of Colima, Mexico, with comments on their venom diversity

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad
Scorpion species diversity in Colima was investigated with a multigene approach. Fieldwork produced 34 lots of scorpions that were analyzed with 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, COI, and 28S rDNA genetic markers.

Inhibition of cGMP‐Signalling Rescues Retinal Ganglion Cells From Axotomy‐Induced Degeneration

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 4, April 2025.
Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons are myelinated only beyond the lamina cribrosa, that is, when leaving the eye. Axotomy‐induced RGC degeneration is likely to be related to excessive nitric oxide (NO) production, leading to an over‐production of cGMP, over‐activation of protein kinase G (PKG) and excessive phosphorylation of target proteins, such as ...

Scorpion Peptides: Potential Use for New Drug Development

open access: yesJournal of Toxicology, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Several peptides contained in scorpion fluids showed diverse array of biological activities with high specificities to their targeted sites. Many investigations outlined their potent effects against microbes and showed their potential to modulate various biological mechanisms that are involved in immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and neoplastic diseases.

Non‐gonadal expression of piRNAs is widespread across Arthropoda

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 1, Page 3-18, January 2025.
PIWI‐interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are known to protect the germline genome from transposable elements. Recently, evidence for their non‐gonadal expression has begun to emerge in some species. In this Perspective article, we combine an extensive literature review with a large analysis of transcriptomic data across arthropod species to investigate non ...

Antiprotozoal and Antimycobacterial Activities of Pure Compounds from Aristolochia elegans Rhizomes

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
We analyzed the antimycobacterial activity of the hexane extract of rhizomes from Aristolochia elegans. Some compounds of this extract were purified and tested against a group of drug‐resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. We also evaluated their antiprotozoal activities. The hexane extract was active against M. tuberculosis H37Rv at a MIC = 100

Three Novel Spider Genomes Unveil Spidroin Diversification and Hox Cluster Architecture: Ryuthela nishihirai (Liphistiidae), Uloborus plumipes (Uloboridae) and Cheiracanthium punctorium (Cheiracanthiidae)

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Spiders are a hyperdiverse taxon and among the most abundant predators in nearly all terrestrial habitats. Their success is often attributed to key developments in their evolution such as silk and venom production and major apomorphies such as a whole‐genome duplication.

Effects of Intraguild Predation: Evaluating Resource Competition between Two Canid Species with Apparent Niche Separation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ecology, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Many studies determine which habitat components are important to animals and the extent their use may overlap with competitive species. However, such studies are often undertaken after populations are in decline or under interspecific stress. Since habitat selection is not independent of interspecific stress, quantifying an animal′s current landscape ...
