Intramyelinic conversion of cerebrosides into acylgalactosylceramides
Neurochemical Research, 1989Acylgalactosylceramide (AGC) synthesis was measured in vivo, and in a cell free system. 24 hours post-injection of [3H] palmitic acid into rat brain, more than 60% of the AGC radioactivity was associated with an ester linkage. Isolated rat myelin was incubated in the presence of [14C] palmitic acid, 2mM ATP, 50 microM CoA and 10 mM MgCl2 and acylation ...

The cerebrosides of bovine heart muscle
Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1970Abstract The distribution and structures of cerebrosides in bovine heart muscle is reported. Both cerebrosides and cerebroside-esters were identified. C 18 -Sphingosine was found to be the predominant base. Palmitic and stearic acids are the main fatty acids, while the carbohydrate moiety is composed of both glucose and galactose.

Induction of cerebroside synthesis in oligodendroglia
Neurochemical Research, 1990Oligodendroglia function to produce myelin membranes which surround axons, enhancing saltatory conduction. Myelin consists of a multitude of condensed membranes which are rich in lipids with the major glycolipids, cerebrosides, being 25% of the total lipid.

Structure of cerebroside in Aspergillus oryzae
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1977Structural studies on cerebroside isolated from Aspergillus oryzae were carried out using mainly gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major component fatty acids were 2-hydroxystearic and 2-hydroxy-trans-octadecenoic acid; branched 17?-methyl nonadecasphingadienine isomers were the predominant long-chain bases.

Adhesion between Cerebroside Bilayers
Biochemistry, 1999The structure, hydration properties, and adhesion energy of the membrane glycolipid galactosylceramide (GalCer) were studied by osmotic stress/X-ray diffraction analysis.(1) Fully hydrated GalCer gave a repeat period of 67 A, which decreased less than 2 A with application of applied osmotic pressures as large as 1.6 x 10(9) dyn/cm(2).

[Certain physical parameters of cerebroside and phospholipid-cerebroside membranes].
Biofizika, 1981Study of some electric properties of bilayer membranes made of cerebrosides and phospholipid-cerebroside mixture has shown that the capacity of cerebroside film is lower than that of lecithin-cerebroside and phospholipid-cerebroside ones (0.22 +/- 0.01 mkf/cm2 and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mkf/cm2 respectively). The membranes had small cation selectivity.

Ceramide* is the basic component of sphingolipids and a key intermediate of both synthesis and degradation of all sphingolipids.1 Major brain sphingolipids are cerebrosides, sulfatides, sphingomyelins, and gangliosides. These are unique to and abundant in the nervous system. In addition, there is a small quantity of free ceramide in brain.

Psychosine prepared from bovine brain cerebroside was used for synthesis of galactosphingolipids with DL-, D-, or L-2-hydroxyhexadecanoic acids and 6-(2'-anthroyl) hexanoic acid. Psychosine was N-acetyl with p-nitrophenyl 2-acetoxyhexadecanoates in the presence of hydroxybenzotriazole to give cerebrosides. The 6-(2'-anthroyl)hexanoic acid reaction with

A general method for the preparation of cerebrosides
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1953Abstract A new method applicable to spleen and brain tissue for the large-scale preparation of cerebrosides is described. The procedure involves the extraction of total lipides from fresh tissue with a boiling mixture of chloroform-methanol and the isolation of the cerebrosides by virtue of their property of accumulating at the interphase zone when ...
