Chagas disease persists as a global public health problem due to the high morbidity and mortality burden. Despite the possibility of a cure and advances in transmission control, epidemiological transformations, such as urbanisation and globalisation, and the emerging importance of oral and vertical transmission mean that Chagas disease should be ...

Approximately 8 million people worldwide are infected by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. After a latent period that can last years or decades, 10% to 30% of infected people develop serious complications, such as cardiomyopathy or gastrointestinal dysfunction.

Chagas' disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is an important cause of morbidity in many countries in Latin America. The important modes of transmission are by the bite of the reduviid bug and blood transfusion. The organism exists in three morphological forms: trypomastigotes, amastigotes, and epimastigotes.

Abstract Chagas disease is the clinical condition triggered by infection with the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The infection is transmitted by triatomine insects while blood feeding on a human host. Field studies predict that one third of an estimated 18 million T cruzi-infected humans in Latin America will die of Chagas disease.

Molecular epidemiologic source tracking of orally transmitted Chagas disease, Venezuela. [PDF]

Different infective forms trigger distinct immune response in experimental Chagas disease. [PDF]
Although metacyclic and blood trypomastigotes are completely functional in relation to parasite-host interaction and/or target cell invasion, they differ in the molecules present on the surface.
