Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Challenge

open access: yes, 2004
Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General identifies mental health as a "cornerstone of health" (p. 458). Although it was published in 1999, the report has not lost its currency.

The statistical analysis of multi-environment data: modeling genotype-by-environment interaction and its genetic basis

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2013
Genotype by environment interaction (GEI) is an important phenomenon in plant breeding. This paper presents a series of models for describing, exploring, understanding and predicting GEI.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The challenge of tuberculosis [PDF]

open access: yesJRSM, 2003
The most important challenge for tuberculosis (TB) care in the UK today is the re-education of the medical and allied professions in diagnosis and management of the disease. In the first half of 2001 there were an exceptionally large number of outbreaks of TB, one of which with over 70 secondary cases (and still counting) is the largest since the ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
